I have kept many emeralds and I have never had any issues... The males do tend to be a bit meaner... if you have a male, it will grow large, quickly and it will have orange "hinges" just behind it's large claws. It's shell will also be very shiny and it's legs will have really long hair. The females are smaller and sage like in color.
The females tend to stay in the nooks of rocks, where as the males that I have had tend to be right out where you can see them. And they can get aggressive when defending territory. I have never had them kill anything though.
More than likely, the clown was sick and the crab was doing his job by cleaning up waste.

I've never seen mine being aggressive. They seem to want to be left alone IME. I agree with the above comment about the clown must have already been sick.

Crabs are opportunistic omnivores.
Crabs are evil.
Crabs will do what you don't expect them to do.
Just sayin........................

you guys are too funny, any ways the crab did grow very fast, I am going to assume it was a male crab. I have decided to give it away to a friend who has a invert tank. I caught it pulling at my frogspawn and seemed to be eating it. This is the first emerald i have that is this aggressive.

I'd agree that crabs are all "bad news bears". I've had emeralds that have attacked fish; it does happen. Even hermit crabs are evil.. but they're just too cute not to add :p

Can't take the pic, already gave away the emerald. But the crab was very dark green, like forest green, not like the others.

I think you mean Joe HAS crabs.
My male emerald is less aggressive than my female ruby mithrax crab. Everytime I go near the ruby she sticks her claws up at me and threatens me. The male just scampers away. I doubt a healthy clownfish couldn't get away from a pesky emerald crab. Did your clown usually spend his nights up high in the tank or down near the ground?
