Tap water and well water aren't quite the same thing. Tap water is different everywhere. Some of it contains tons of fluoride, some of it is traveling through ancient copper plumbing through the city before it gets to your house. Some of it is absolutely fine to use in a tank. Well water is going to contain all kinds of dissolved solids... from being in a well.

Cavan, I had the same problem, but I couldn't even keep snails alive.Since I've been using a VERY cheap RO/DI filter, the only losses, in the last 8 months, are from the !@*# yellow tang. After having my well water tested by a environmental company, I found out that I have extremely high copper, lead and arsenic. The worlds largest (formerly-Bisbee Copper Queen Mine) copper mine is straight up the hill east of here by 12 miles.I'll bet if you bought a TDS or heavy metals test kit, you'd find high metals, like me.
