So I just realized that a hurricane is going to be swinging by this weekend (seriously, who would have thought Jersey would get hit by a hurricane). We are expecting 5-10 inches of rain (the ground is already saturated since we have received 13 inches so far this month) and winds in the range of 70-100. My main concern for where I live is power outages. I rarely have power outages, but with the ground being saturated and the high winds, I believe power outages are going to happen on a large scale. I need to put together the necessities to get me by just in case. If I did not live in an apartment, I would probably own a generator.
The list:

  • 25 gallons distilled water (may buy more)

  • 3-4 battery operated pumps
    Flashlight
    Batteries
What else should I get?

Battery operated fans.....how far are you from your car? you can get an inverter that hooks up to your cig lighter.....or you can get one that runs off a battery and bring it in (probably easier) BUT you need to recharge it eventually
MORE BATTERIES>....LOL...and a battery operated radio.....car charger for your phone and/or laptop computer

I'm parked pretty far from my apartment. I'm thinking about getting as much water as I can and batteries. I never thought I would be taking precautions for a hurricane. The people I work with could not believe that I was going shopping to get things for my fish tank to prepare for the storm. I showed them a pic and explained I have over $2,000 invested in my tank. They got the point.

dont forget some water and food for yourself. If you dont have a gas grill then at least peanut butter and bread. lol When charlie hit we were without power for a few days. Lucky my husband was a police office and able to get us a motel room for a couple of them. Our house had damage. I had no tank then.

I have 3 cases of water, a mini campfire grill (we also have a gas stove so the campfire grill will be a last resort), and will be doing some shopping for some non-perishables. My dog has plenty of food and treats. I feel like I am missing something.

Cooler full of ice just incase power goes out for long time to preserve food for you and any frozen food for fish. Leave the food for as long as you can in the fridge. Good luck Krista I hope you don't get hit hard.

Cooler full of ice, great idea! Now, I need a cooler and will get ice when the storm gets closer. I'm going to wake up early and get everything that I can before I go to work. I hope the storm isn't bad. I remember a tropical storm (Floyd) that happened 11 years ago. It disrupted things a little bit.

I have had extra fridays off for the past 5 weeks - the company I work for has gone to manditry 4 day work week, so I have to reduce my spending on my SW tanks by 20%

Do you have a lot of windows?? will your apt complex cover them. Be sure you have someplace to go with supplys that has no windows in case it gets bad. I remember in charlie- watching my sliding glass doors bow in and out with the wind. The window in my daughters room blew out. We covered the ones in the front, but not that side since we werent supose to get hit. lol

So true...when we had our power go out..I went the store an 3 hours later...we couldn't even buy batteries, they were all gone.

Telephones - Fully charged cell phone with extra battery and a traditional (not cordless) telephone set
Cash (with some small bills) and Credit Cards - Banks and ATMs may not be available for extended periods
Keys
Toys, Books and Games
Important documents - in a waterproof container or watertight resealable plastic bag
— insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, Social Security card, etc.
Tools - keep a set with you during the storm
Vehicle fuel tanks filled
Pet care items
— proper identification / immunization records / medications
— ample supply of food and water
— a carrier or cage
— muzzle and leash

Ok, I went shopping before work and got the following:
  • Two battery operated pumps
    50 gallons of distilled water
    Car inverter for laptop
    First aid kit
    Flashlights
    Misc food (non-perishable)
    Lots of batteries

I forgot airline tubing and airstone for the pump (and to think I work in a pet store). I might have some stuff to scrounge up in my extra supplies basket. I will keep everyone posted and post pics of anything that happens. I am supposed to go into work on Sunday at some point to check on the pets and survey the damage. My work is being totally good with supporting those of us in the stores.
Now, I just wait for Irene.
