Anything more recent? He's quoting things from 1983! UV lights were junk, just like all the lights back then...There were no electronic ballasts and HO lights. No Swirl design to increase exposure like the new Corallifes UV lights.
I would like to see something within the past year say the same thing.
I agree old junk like that back in the 80's prolly didn't do a dam thing...

The late 70's early 80's just sucked in general....think of one nice car between those years!

I have no ich here...so my UV must be working. I think its a waste of money but if you have some money to blow put it there. I would make sure all your equiptment can't be any better before you get a UV. I took the bait (actually my dad did).

running a UV part time yes is going to ineffective on the paresite as as others also stated the flow rate is a very important facter in helping reduce free floating paresites or bacteria through the UV itself the longe the water is exposed through the lighting the more effective it will be.but it still will not be able to teat 100 % of the water without mixing the old stuff back in it basicly reduces it.as for ich treatments only one treatment is 100% effective that is copper.formaline baths can help in reducing the paresite on the fish itself hypo can also reduce the amounts of this paresite only in the water.ich can also survive hypo treatment for months before its completly gone from your fish but 100 eratication is nearly impossible to have in any tank. hers how it works ok you buy a new fish you place it in qt right away to prevent ich or other illnesses.even if you hypo the fish you may kill some of it .most people dont treat the fish long enough to have 100% efectiveness.as i stated before hypo is only effective again the ich paresite not other strands of paresites or bacterial or fungal..ok so your new fish has appeared to be ich free for a few weeks to a month.you assume the fish is free from harbering anything that may be harmful to your tank.the accual life span of any paresite is yet to be determined for sure.so now you place your new fish into the system thinking its 100% free of anything. but then your fish get ich or another form of paresite how is this possible?people dont treat these possible problems until it becomes a problem in there systems by that time your entire system is infected.most dont fw dip new LR before adding it to the dt corals ect .we assume bcause we have quarentined these items for 30 days its free from all harful things.
we add rock filled with life forms microscopic and others we do our best to keep everything alive on them..think about for moment how many times have you experienced this happening or reading about this happening (my fish has been in hypo for over a month and still has ich how can this be? more than i care to count.we add live sand harboring millions of microscopic life .do we run this through fw? no we dont want to kill it.god only knows what we are accually putting into our tanks for the sake of natural filteration.if you want 100% effective against all these possible illnesses you wil have to keep your in a sterile enviroment such as copper treatment used as a preventative always present in the tank.completely washed out bleached rock.gravel bottoms.theres your 100% cure oh yeh plastic corals and decor, fake plants.its not a perfect hobby there is no one science to it what works for one hobbiest may not work as well for others .the only thing we all know for sure is good water quality(clean) and good foods for our fish.these are basic needs for these fish how we acheive this for each indevidual tank is a matter of preference.just because you are I say we wont do it doesnt make it wrong.shaing advice is one thing dictation is another.it is soly the preference of each hobbiest to take into concideration the advice given and use their own judgement.we can blame the Lfs also all we want for bad advice but whos fault is it if the person paying for it all doesnt do his own research to find out if the lfs was mistaken or not.
