It is important to find the source of this. starting over may not be the right answer if you are just starting over with the same source of this problem. I would encourage you to dig a bit deeper into this, rather than starting over.
I suspect your problem may be your tap water. Switch to RO.

This sounds may just be the natural transition from brown to green algaes to me, though a pic would be beneficial in determining.

Normal, maybe... but I'd stop using the tap water. Get a clean water source for all future top offs and water changes.
As far as good snails... a verity is always best IMO. The only snail I do not like is the turbo snail.

I have the same brown problem. I have 2 tanks and one has alot of brown stuff and the other doesn't have a whole bunch. the only difference is one has a queen conch and the other doesn't. I swear by this. i actualy see my conch eating the stuff nothing else will touch. Now this is my personal opinion others may disagree but in my experience it helped. Beware conches get big.

Why is it that you don't like turbos?

Oh and I went on vacation and the light was off in my tank for 2 days. I also put stuff called phos-ban in my filter. But after 2 days with the stuff having no light it was 95% gone. And my tank was covered in it.
