This is pretty ironic. I had the TV on this morning, and Good Morning America broke in at 7 with a special announcement by Dubya. As soon as he started talking about the economy, I told my wife, "I bet ya $100 the Market tanks today." She said she'll treat me to a nice dinner this weekend...

And there's another one...Dubya. Yet if I say Hussein is running for Prez....oh Nellie.

Maybe I am confused......................didn't the stock market crash like a couple weeks ago and it was super super low...............how does that make it the highest?????????? That really does not make any sense. Are you talking about that it was highest a while back?? Will someone please clarify for me?

During George Bush's Presidency, the market hit all time highs. It was actually very prosperous, especially after 9-11, until the last couple years.
Pelosi and crew's "new congress in town", and the recent Presidential race seem to have had some negative affect.

You have been here long enough to know this will turn into a political thread.... You also know the market crash is Obama's fault, come on man.

Nice stretch Grouper. Sorry, Georgie has been known as 'W' since he was a shady governor here in Texas. His family even calls him that.

After all, Bush is a republican and it is the lowest it has been since the Great Depression.
Let me help journey out....as I about blew a gasket as well reading this comment.
oct 29th 1929 the dow was at 230.07.
Today the dow is 8578.
See why that may be seen as slightly retarded? Just sayin'

Gotcha. Thanks I was getting confused there for a minute. Well, my point was that it was the lowest during his presidency as of right now. All that spending has to have some effect. Money has to come from somewhere. Well, there you go. SO SO SO happy to have him out of office.

especially after 9/11???? You mean during the last recession??? And last year in this month the Dow hit its all time high.
Now normally I would say the stock market crashed for reasons that would align with my political hopes, but in all reality, the markets NEVER just go up. Extra emphasis on NEVER. Its called the business cycle, taught in intro business and econ courses.
However, this downturn has been exceptionally bad do to some policies that were put into place by the Gov't (both parties), and we have had a one day loss that was greater than in the great depression. Plus, in market value lost, it is way worse than the depression, but look at the differences in levels and what money is worth.

Forgot something- The presidential election would have some effect on the markets as it is a factor of uncertainty and there are discrepancies between people on what risk factor to put on the new possible administration.

Why is that retarded??? Read my statement. I did not say it was AS LOW. I said it was the lowest it has been SINCE the Great Depression. Is that untrue? I am not arguing that it was also the highest a while back. It is completely irrelevant now since we are a gazillion in the hole anyway. I am just hoping that Obama can put things to rights because I don't think we will be better off with McCain, although how could we get worse........

Again you are misinformed...
The maket was lower after 9-11 and came back; Many of us would say the rebound was a direct result of President Bush's policies in dealing with terror and protecting the homeland that made this rebound possible...
I'd be happy to have the President out of office too if I believed and promoted all of the misinformation, lies and conspiracies you all seem to.

Unless I'm missing a date as I look over the data, it looks like the last time the Dow closed at this level was Jan 2, 1998....

Well, I would say that part of the rebound was Bush's Policies on terror, but it didn't bottom out until March 3, 2003, so it can't be the only thing. The money left over from the tech bubble being pumped into housing is also a major factor as well. Of course putting your finger on the "one" thing that changed the economy is almost impossible without doing multiple regressions....and even then....
