I wouldn't put more than one clown in a 10 gallon to start with.

In my opinion it's too small, especially for a new hobbiest. It has been done before successfully.
IMO Percula are better suited for a 10 gallon, but 10's are a real challenge for new hobbiests. The smallest mistake can quickly become a disaster, even for experienced hobbiests.
Larger Ocellaris that have been alone are likely to be female. Small Ocellaris from the fish store are usually not female yet.

i have 2 clowns in my 10g that i have had set up for almost 2 months now. it is a bit of a challenge to get all the peramiters right. one little move in the wrong direction and i have to do a water change. i am used to the larger tanks where little things dont make this big of a difference. if you are gonna have 2 clowns in the tank make sure you have alot of LR to help out the filtration, you will also have to make sure that a water change is done once every two weeks other wise everything gets a little dirty. it also depends on what type of filtration you have.
my 10g:
AC70
Maxijet 400
15#'s LR
1g water change every 2 weeks
feed 3 times a week
2 clowns
10 snails(differnt types)
1 peppermint shrimp
and everything is perfect as long as i stay on top of the water changes and i watch how much i feed them.
