feather duster keeps retracting

yesterday i got 3 feather dusters, they opened and picked spots they liked, 2 seems fine, stay open pretty much 24-7, but one every so often retracts for about 5 seconds, then comes back out slowly and opens up
there are no hermits or anything bumping into it or attacking it, very random and brief, what would be causing this? the others dont do it, so im not sure if something is wrong, or i just got a "special" worm

Is the flow too high in that spot? If the worm isn't quite used to the surroundings yet, it may do this because it feels threatened. I'm willing to bet that if you leave it alone, it will act normally. Make sure the placement is okay. The feathers should be moving very subtly...if the flow is too high, the worm could drop it's plume. Good Luck, I'm sure she's alright

I think you have a "special" worm

Really...In my two tanks I have 5 featherdusters, and NONE of them stay open the same...some are open more, some less, some all the time, some some of the time...know what I mean

well its just retracts like instantly like something bit it, but theres nothing there, its not in super strong flow, but the majority of the time its open, maybe every 30minutes or so, it retracts then comes back out all within 30 seconds

I don't know if Featherdusters can see, but I know a lot of the time if I move fast by one they will do that....It may be picking up (or seeing) movement of some sort, and it might be a scaredy cat featherduster

Anyway like I said...I have 5....2 out of that 5 I can do whatever I want by them and they swill stay open...2 out of the remaining 3 close when I come by, and the other one just closes for who knows why

I don't think you are supposed to glue featherdusters

I agree though...it's hard to find the right size hole in the rock that it will fit into...and not slip out..

well they move on their own, not far, but they will crawl and slide behind my LR
and im sure your not supposed to, that would be like gluing down an anemone, wouldnt work and just cruel, i was reading on another forum how to keep them in one spot, many people said they glue them
i understand that would work, but isnt fair to the worm since the flow might be too strong or not strong enough or some other problem

I have had one slip out, go behind the rock where I couldn't get to it, and then in about a week....it was out in a spot I could get to.....I actually thought it was dead..LOL

I've had one drop it's plume. I was horrified, but it ended up being one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Watching it grow that baby back was awesome

Don't glue them down
They will attach themselves to the LR just fine.

Pez...Do you have any clue how often they drop their feathers?
and they get a little bigger each time right?

i never was going to glue them down, never crossed my mind, just heard other people do it, and ya one of mine slipped back last night, and i moved it since it wasnt attached to anything, and now its slipping back again

Yeah I think they do that cause they think it is safer since they are vulnerable "creatures"

Pretty much only when they get stressed I believe. Mine dropped it's plume after I moved it (well moved the rock it was on) I'm not 100% but the way I understand it, when a single feather gets exhausted, they will lose it and grow a new one. But I could be wrong.
