Fed Ex brought my LR today

KDLBEM,
Hi! I got my rock from this site back in February. It does have tons of life. Their rock is not cured though, it's aqua-cultured so it's litterally taken right from the ocean before they ship it. There may be a little die off, but not much if your tank is cycled already.
There are parts of the rock that are actually big clams, which we noticed and realized what they were after a few days of confusion. The rock covers them, but when the lights are dim they open. Also at least a hundred barnacles, feather dusters and some Nazarus Snails were in the rock we got. The only thing that we aren't too fond of is the small spiny crabs (shape looks like the kind you eat) that seem to be multiplying. They are small as your fingernail and either purplish or dark gray and spiny. They never seemed to do any harm to any of the brown polyps on the rock, so we didn't drive ourselves crazy trying to rid them. They are still in both our tanks, but our Trigger is trying to catch them in our agressive tank! Good luck and look closely in a day or two and check out the life that appears!!

We've already spotted a baby feather duster...so far no critters though! Everything else we've put in the tank (polyps and stuff) has opened up within a few hours so if theres anything else there, I'd expect to see it soon.

PS...Vince:
Did you get the pics? We sent them to you and @knight at the same time and it doesn't look like he got them, let me know and I'll re-send if you didn't get them.

I was staring at the tank last night, and saw something or things reaching out of the small pores on the rock. If you blink, you missed it. they are very small and very quick. Also have a colony of tubeworms that came on a rock with some button polyps. I don't even watch the TV anymore(I think it's jealous). This is SOOOO much better than a fish only tank! My neighbor was saying he might want a salt tank now, until I told him how much I've spent on mine. I had to break out the smelling salts to revive him :p .
If anyone didn't get the pics, let me know, and I'll get them out to ya.

Hey KDLBEM,
Those pores are actually barnacles... our rock was covered with them. You will notice more and more of them. They actually filter stuff out of the water with their feathery little tounges. There are most likely many feather dusters (tube worms)that are on the rock too... wait another day or two! We had a hard time trying to decide which part of the rock was going to face the front because their was so much life! Anyway... I do know what you mean about staring at the tank... we thought about canceling cable those first few weeks

moga, for some reason I can't get the pics into a post(sorry I'm a computer moron). There's enough people who got them, maybe someone else can get it to work. Or send me your e-mal, and I'll send them to ya. My e-mail is KDYREM@msn.com

Emile,
I ordered the rock before I talked to you about stores there. And I've gotten SOOOO much help and knowledge from this board, I figured I would give something back to SWF.com(besides the prices are great :D ). I was kind of hesitant about ordering online, but would do it again from here anytime. I lost your e-mail addy when we switched to msn a couple of days ago, so could you send it to me or post it so I can send you pics?

While you're sending another batch of pics out, please send to me, too. I need another 25 lbs. or so of LR.
My e-mail is: jgibbon@airmail.net
Thanks!
PS How long did it take to "cure"? I have hermits in my main tank so far and all levels are perfect. Just wondering how much time to plan for curing in a separate container.

I have a 92 bowfront, recently finished cycling, just got a clean up crew and some fish. red emperor snapper and convict tang. All pics of em on my website, and a snowflake eel.
I was lookin into ordering some of the LR from swf and was curious about "curing". What exactly does that mean. and will it re-cycle my tank since its freshly out of the cycle.

If you buy the LR from a site, you will more than likely want to cure it before you put it in your tank. The amonia levels will rise with the shipping of the rock because of no filtraion. You will have some die-off in your tank on the LR.

whats needed to cure it?
I'm new to the saltwater life.....
so I'm trying to learn all i can before i go wasting money or time.

Goblin, what's your e-mail. It's not in your profile.
Weazil, use the search feature and do a search for curing liverock, and I'm sure you'll get more accurate info than I can give(I've only been at this SW thing since Feb.). I had LOTS of extra filtration hooked up to the tank when I put the LR in. So I barely had any ammonia, and it was gone in less than 8 hours.
You might also check into getting overnight delivery(instead of the two day delivery). With the high tempratures everywhere, you'll avoid some of the dieoff.
HTH,
B
