First Corals Ever!!!!

WOWOWOWOWOWOW!!!! I'm freaking out...can you tell? :hilarious
OK...I don't even know where to begin telling the story...I'm too excited, I'm all shaky and bouncy.....but I've got 3 hours to wait while things acclimate, so I may as well begin at the beginning.
So I've been wanting to find a closer LFS (Tropaquarium is awesome, but sooooooo pricey and 45 minutes away!!!), so I searched around here and on the 'net and found 2 places on Rt.22 not 30 minutes from us; Pet Shanty and Ocean Galleries II.
I was up early, so anxiously awaited an appropriate time to rouse the Beast - and eventually ended up dragging my Husband out of bed at the crack of lunch
He very graciously agreed to haul me around to both these places

Both look like awesome stores; Pet shanty even has this MASSIVE toadstool coral named "Steve," who's like 2 feet wide and is over 17 years old. GORGEOUS!!!
.... but Ocean Galleries by far had the best prices on corals.
We had stopped in Ocean Galleries first, looked around, asked for pricing, and told them we'd come back after a stop we had to make further down the road. We left and went to Pet Shanty, gawked at Steve for a while, then returned to OG.
The guy there was SOOOOO nice. Very informative, and very excited about fish and all things underwater. Great to meet a geek who loves his job :joy:
I had sooooooooo much to choose from - I didn't think I'd have too many choices with lowlight corals, but they had bajillions of different kinds of mushrooms and polyps and things. He was giving us phenomenal pricing on everything, so I really had to wrack my brain. Finally, I decided that what I got first didn't matter too much - everything looked so healthy, so hopefully if it does well in my tank, I can propagate it and bring it in to trade for other varieties.
I went with a nice mango sized rock (the big mangos, and exactly that shape, too) that was COVERED in gorgeous dark purple coraline that had 7 nickel/quarter sized bumpy, glowy green mushrooms (look just like the Green Rhodactis u can buy from this site) on it.
It was priced at 59.99, but he gave it to me for 49, and also gave us the astrea snail that had taken up residence on it. He said the snail had been on the rock since it came into the store, and he didn't want to part the little guy from it.

I wasn't planning on buying anything else, but then he (I am so annoyed I didn't get his name, but I DID get a card) took us over to a coral tank w/ actinics over it and pointed out some really beautiful button polyps. Big fist sized rocks that were just COVERED in the corals. 25 bucks. TWENTY FIVE!!!! How on EARTH was I going to pass that up???
So he packed everything for us with a good amount of water in each double bag, we paid and were on our way. Half the ride home I had to clamp my hands over my mouth to keep from squealing w/ excitement and scaring my husband off the road.

I took the bags out to look at them a few times, and have already discovered 2 tiny white sea star hitchikers on the mushroom rock, along with about 12 little brown zoos.
I cannot WAIT to see what other crazy hitchikers I end up with!!! src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/hot.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Hot!" class="inlineimg" />
When we got home, I set everything up that I'd need to acclimate them, and then went to put the bags into the tank for temp acclimation.
....uh oh...the bags were wider than my tank....they wouldn't fit!!!! I got nervous, so I took the temp in the bags - only about a degree warmer than my tank water, so I opened them up into the acclimation bucket and poured everyone in, making sure they were well submerged. By the time all the water had touched the air, it had cooled down signifigantly, so I started the drip - I'm nervous that I couldn't acclimate them slowly to the temp, but it was less than 1 degree, and it DID get them out of the bags faster.
So now everyone is sitting tight in the bucket, about 2 and a half hours left 'till they're done acclimating, and I'm so excited that I don't know where to put myself.
I got a few pix of everyone after I put them in the bucket - really doesnt do them much justice, but u get the idea.
I AM SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO STOKED!!!!
In the meantime - all u folks with button polyps....have u found that they prefer higher or lower flow/placement?
Any suggestions as to placement (or anything else) for the shrooms OR the polyps would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!
THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!! :jumping: :jumping:

Love your excitement, just wait till they are all open and lookin' pretty in your tank!! With something like PC lighting or halides the shrooms could go on the bottom of the tank- I think all of your goods may be considered a medium light/medium flow placement, but maybe reference this site or elsewhere to make sure. I am rather new at the reef thing myself so hopefully some other folks will chime in. Show us some more pics whn you have them in the tank!

congrats on your new corals, it is exciting isnt it. did you ask at the pet shop on how to acclimate. I have never dripped mine, i always just temp, and plop them in. I have never had a problem. good luck.

thanx for the flow info guys!! I get to agonize over placement for a little longer...things are still acclimating

Theresa, yes, I spoke to the Fish guys about acclimation - they suggested the drip method, as does SWF.com. It worked really well for my inverts - figured I'd stick with what worked.
Anyone have any suggestions as to how long I should acclimate? I've heard the amount of TIME matters, and I've also heard amount of WATER transferred into the bucket matters-
My tank is only 12 gallons...I'm worried that allowing the water in the bucket to quadruple would seriously deplete the amount of water in my tank.... I am of course aerating new water to replace what's been removed...but I'm still concerned about leaving the water level low overnight while the newly mixed water sits... :help:

oh...and do I leave the lights off for the rest of the night like I did after acclimating my cleanup crew? :notsure:

so do i. just float them and then put them in the tank. all my corals are doing fine. i asked my lfs about it and they said that if they acclimated every coral they got in, it would be dead by the time they got to it lol. so i took his advice and all is well.

I couldnt read your whole post... sorry.. I have this thing.. that when the post is too long... I cant read it! lol sorry again..
Although I cought that you're acclimating the corals... - dont bother :) really its not necessary! Get them used to the temperature and then toss them in. I usually drop my bags in my sump and like whenever I get around to it I rip them outta the bag and place them where I want them to go.
I've seen my lfs around here not even do that... they just take them out of their shipping boxes and drop them in the tank.. and the next time I go in they are all open and beautiful.
If you had some delicate corals ... then maybe drip them... but mushrooms/polyps/lps/blahblah... just temp acclimate.

Thanx 2 all who replied! :joy:
Well, I acclimated them for 3 hours after all, and it looks like I'll only have to mix a new gallon or 2, the water level isn't THAT bad. It was a little high when I started out - that must have been my saving grace.
I'm glad to see that every1 has had so much success with just temp acclimation - I'm too nervous to skip the drip. The corals seemed really happy about it, tho - some of the polyps even opened while they were in the bucket.
I DID take your advice however and turned the lights on after I put the corals in the tank and replaced the hood. EVERYONE opened in less than 30 minutes, and the shrooms are just streeeetching out - it's so beautiful!!
One thing happened that is both very exciting and very nerve wracking... I found that I have a brittle star hitchiker.
I was inspecting the shroom rock and saw what looked to be some brittle star tentacles extending out of a little hole in the side (You can even see them in some of the pix below). I wasn't sure if it was alive or not, so I waited for my shrimp to come around. Sure enough, he came and started feeling up the rock, and when he got to the tentacles, they quickly pulled inside their hole, and then came slowly out after he was gone!!!

Oh I DO hope it lives!! It's tiiiiiiiiiny - I can only see the tentacles, but they're each only a few centimeters long.
Now I have to go and raid all of Ophiura's posts for info on how to care for him.

I'm still freaking!!!!! This is the COOLEST THING EVER!!!!

awesome addtitons. congrats. yet on one of the last pictures i noticed mojano anemones, they really have to go before they sting your new corals. as to how to get rid of them i dont know , so ask around. but its best to get rid of them now, before its too late.
again, enjoy the corals, tey are beutiful.
now that you've seen them open, give them a few weeks, and watch them grow!!!

Thanx Exile - I'll look into actinics when I decide to retrofit.

Hhhm... Annanymous - are u sure those are majanos? I've just been looking around for pix of them and the majanos don't look too much like the brown polyps I've got on the purple rock.
Maybe it's just the picture, 'cuz when I look at 'em they look just like plain old brown zoos.
I'll keep an eye on them though... thank you!!

hahaha!!! i am the exact same way mimzy!!! My LFS is my bank because that is where all my money goes and i am always so giddy after going that my friends can tell when i did.
the first coral i got where some mushrooms. super stoked, then two rocks of 3 types of zoos and mushrooms, then i got a frogspawn, then two different small frags of star polyps and a leather, then a hammer, and lastly 2 types of mushrooms....... let just say ive been one giddy kid lately :joy:
i love the enthusiasm though, cause whenever i get like that my friends jsut look at me wierd and laugh...... but now i have a digital camera so they can see my tank and maybe become obsessed too?
yeah... thats how far i am..... im passed denial.... im flat out obsessed... oh well... better than an obsession like crack right? speakin of crack, you do get giddy kinda often *eyes suspiciously*.... oh dear... im babbling.....im tired,,.... when im tired...i babble.... oh dear, its 2:04... that is why...... oh well... im going to go stare at my tank a bit then go to sleep.....
did you have any fishies in that tank of yours?
and what lighting do you have? i have an oscar who will soon outgrow my 12 gallon and will be given to a friend, so i want to turn that into a nano.

I love it. Pple think I'm on crack. WHAT WOULD YOU THINK IF U ACTUALLY SAW ME DOING MY HAPPY CORAL DANCE IN PERSON ?!?!?!?!?????

I dunno man, I always tell my pothead friends that I can get high without chemical assistance, but no one seems to believe me. I think I'll start referring them to you people

Aaaaaanyhow - Feixjai, I'm planning on getting a pair of percs and MAYBE a small gobi of some sort. Maybe. I'm still working on my inverts tho...I want a fire shrimp and a couple sexies too - not to mention a feather duster. It'll be a bit before I get fish...I think

Tell u the truth, I've got a TON of amphipods in my tank (like, besides the crawling sandbed of copepods), and even tho I know they're really good - they're sooooo UGLY!!! I just may not be able to take them much longer; might just have to get my percs to pare down the population a bit.

Oh...and here are some more pix...'cuz I'm obsessed, that's why. :joy:
