fishermans or fisherwomans -- come in

wassup guys and gals
Today was the 1st time I have gone fishing. I went fishing in the river and it was pretty tough. I had a tough time casting and the bait keeps flying out. Does anyone have any pointers for me? What kinda bait do you guys use for river fishing from the shore? Also what size weights, any floaters, Lures, or baits do you guys use?
o yea, any pics of any fishes you guys caught are welcome in this post. :happyfish

What kind of fish are you trying to catch? What kind of bait are you using? How deep of water were you fishing in?
I've really only fished for pan fish and bass.
You use different types of bait for different types of fish.
For bass, we use bass lures--either rubber worms for deeper water, or big frog poppers for top water fishing (you don't use bobbers with these) or sometimes big nightcrawlers. There are lots and lots of types of bass lures...but these have worked for me.
We had big bass hitting today on the rubber worms and big nightcrawlers, crappies were hitting crappie minnows, jibs and small spinners-- and the blue gills were liking the leaf worms today (sometimes I use grubs, which also work).
I love the slip bobbers, but some people think they're annoying. They're hard to figure out at first.
My BF loves to fish and excels at it. He could tell you about trout, northern, walleye, muskie and bigger game fish...because it takes some skill to catch them...like I said, I'm mostly about the easy stuff.
As for keeping your bait on, just hook it better. I triple hook my worms so they don't fly off or just get taken by the fish. I whole hook grubs, because the're so small. Hook minnows through the gills.
You can improve your casting if you practice without a hook in your yard. It worked for me.
Any more questions, post again...I'll turn it over to the BF if I can't answer.

I don't know what kind of river it is but for fishing for trout I use a fly rod. I have also used powerbait which also works well if you don't know how to use a fly.

It would help to know what your trying to catch or at least your location. In a small stream where smallmouth or trout are the target fish and your using a spincaster setup I like to use a good spinner such as a Panther Martin. You can almost always catch something with a spinner. Like mentioned, try casting in your front yard, practicing will help with your accuracy and technique.

FYI - The unisex term is Angler.
I use wet flys for rivers around here. A few types of Trout and Small Mouth Black Bass are the quarry.

I agree with Sandman, offshore is a blast! I used to work for an offshore fishing boat manufacturer & got paid to travel all over North America to fish.
To answer your question, it all depends on what you want to catch & what part of the country you're in. Just keep on keeping on & find a local angler you can go with.
As far as equipment, I use G. Loomis & Shimano, but anything will be good to get you started.
