Flame Angel Diet

I have a 55g tank that I plan to add a Flame Angel to in the future (hopefully near future).
I've heard these fish need sponge in their diet. What I am wondering is how true is this?
Is sponge crucial, or just nice to have?
I don't have corals, so I wont have to worry it picking at all.
I feed Ocean Nutrition Formula's 1 and 2 flake, and will get pellets too. I also feed nori, mysis and spirulina flake.
Will this diet work for an Angel, or should I include more? What other foods would you recomend?

first of all...DITCH the flakes and pellets....that is like feeding snacks all day...You need to get a good frozen diet going on....frozen mysis, and they have foods specifically designed for angels....for example: mega marine angel.....
you can use the flakes and pellets, but maybe once a week as an evening snack

After looking at different Ocean Nutrition foods, I found a frozen food specially formulated to Dwarf Angels. Surprisingly, it did not include sponge, as Ocean Nutrition claimed that Dwarf Angels have very different dietary needs than large angels. They actually have a different food for large angels, that included sponge. So do they really need the sponge? The dwarf angel food was maily different marine seaweeds, which I provide through the formula foods, spirulina and algae.

Why? The clowns actually wont eat mysis, I don't think they know what it is. They just look at. But they love flake.
I do plan on trying to include more frozen foods, but the nearest LFS is an hour and a half drive, and ordering is such a pain.
But I will try.
Is there that much difference between frozen and flake formula foods?

The formula 1 and 2 foods are okay....just not adequate for daily nutrition......

The fat little clowns. They make me laugh. Like I said, they don't eat mysis. I'm going to keep trying though, I think once I get somethings that eats it they will understand it's food.
I'm actually not a heavy feeder at all, I fees lightly and often.
I'll get some more seaweed sheets, and frozen. Any recomendation?
Brine shrimp (not necessarily for the angel)?

Lol, sorry. I'm not ignoring your advice, just trying to get more.
I was actually after just frozen foods for the whole tank. Something to make everyone happy, and then feed the mega marine for the angel.
I'll look into vitamins next time I order something.

I just tossed in my Flame into the DT from the QT. Hes getting beaten up by my Tomini Tang
All my other fish are leaving him alone. When I had him in the QT I was feeding him Formula 2 Flakes, Frozen mysis, Green Algae sheets, and krill.

And how did he do on that diet?
My real question is is the angel diet something I have to have, or something I could add later?

IMO you HAVE to have it.....they are supposed to have certain things in their diet....I would not wait too long before feeding them what is required....

Okay, I'll have to get some soon so I can get an angel soon.
I just don't want to pay for overnight shipping, so maybe I'll take a road trip sometime.
Meowzer, what exactly do you feed?
I mean to your whole tank(s).

Ocean Nutrition is correct here. Dwarf angel fish DO NOT
have the sponge based dietary need of large angels.
(Actually it's believed 2 or so species do, but they are not commonly kept)

No, they do not 'need' the sponge, but it's the sort of thing that if fed, it doesn't hurt. Sponge has been linked to color promotion in marine fish, and all my fish, triggers, wrasses, etc, get some sponge when I feed my angels.

It's been a while since I've read a Formula pellet label, but I believe Formula relies mostly on spirulina in their foods? Spirulina is a freshwater algae. So it's obviously not the natural diet of dwarf angels. The Ocean Nutrition dwarf angel food is a great choice. Continue to feed seaweed sheets, and some meaty foods, mysis, cyclopeeze, is a great diet for a dwarf angel.

I feed a variety of frozen foods....
saltwater multipack, formula 2, prime reef...h20 frozen variety mix for large, medium and small fish, h20 spirulina, brine, mysis mix, h20 coral food mix
I also feed frozen (well thawed) scallops from Walmart
I do have thera+a pellets, formula 2 pellets and flakes, & sea veggies. I also use the green marine algae sheets daily...I also have the brown and red algae too..
For vitamins, I use selcon, zoe, vita-chem, zoecon, garlic guard, and gvh fish food soak with garlic, vitamins and hufas
I DO NOT feed all of this at one time...LOL....I alternate, and the pellets and flakes maybe ...MAYBE 1 - 2x a week in the evening for a snack

So basically sponge is a good thing to have, but isn't going to have a negative impact if not fed (in the event I run out and have to get more)?
Isn't nori green algea?
Is there any need to buy seaweed specifically made for feeding fish?
It's not that I'm agaisnt buying it, nori is just much easier to find for me.

Thank you, that gives me plenty to think about.
The scallops, do you chop them, and just feed them raw?
Are there any land based greens that a good? Spinach? Broccoli?

I thaw the scallops and just drop in tiny pieces.....I also feed them to my anemones.
I read in another thread where someone feeds their fish broccolli, brussel sprouts, and some other stuff....this was very recent....I'll see if I can find it

Okay, thank you.
Lol, I'd feel bad feeding my fish brussel sprouts...
Well, I fed my clowns mysis tonight, and they loved it, unlike the last time I fed it. So that will be fed daily now, and different flakes will be alternated in the mornings, with mysis at night. That should work fine for clowns.
And they can pick at the nori for the LMB if they want.

I would do less flakes.....feed teh frozen foods daily, and the flakes maybe 2x a week

Nori is usually made from Porphyra
, a saltwater seaweed. You don't need to buy seaweed designed for aqauarium use. I get mine from Wal-Mart. You just have to make sure the Nori isn't seasoned, just dried/roasted.
Dwarf angels natural diet is filamentous micro-algae. One of the key aspects to successfully keeping a dwarf is having an established tank, where the angel can graze from the live rock.
I'm not sure a dwarf angel would bother with land-based greens. Typically most public aquariums offer romaine lettuce to their tangs/other herbivore fish.
