Foam 'pre-filter' - leave it on or take it off?

I have a couple canister filters (media only inside - Eheim 2229 Wet/Dry w/12L SeaChem Matrix), the intakes came with foam pre-filters. Directions say to leave them on 6-8 weeks then to remove them. Does it really matter if I remove them or leave them on? I figured this is a way to strain out the larger physical debris and keep it out of the canister, resulting in a little less maintenance. Should I be letting these pieces go through to the media in the filter? Thanks, just looking for the best way to handle this.

I agree that they are an added "strainer" of debris....and I would leave them on....ALTHOUGH...ONLY if you clean them often
(just my opinion)

I will have to take a couple photos later...but... when you say 'both' are you meaning both of the pre-filters at the same time, or do you mean cleaning the pre-filter and the canister at the same time? I have a feeling you are going to say there are benefitial bacteria (or something close) on the pre-filters.
What is the best way to clean these prefilters? I have always rinsed the media in the water change water, but the filters do clog over time and need a little more 'coaxing' to clean them. Is it safe to use the kitchen sink sprayer to clean them (then dry them off before re-installing them)?
