Fondant?!

Well as a true watcher of the food network I have become obsessed with decorating a cake with fondant! For those of you who clicked this thinking it might have been something more interesting, sorry it is a type of covering used to decorate a cake. The problem is I do not know how to make it and when I did a search for recipes it appears that everyone has their own idea on how to make fondant. Anyone know about fondant, or could maybe point me in the right direction?
Thanks
Scott

I took the Wilton cake decorating class 1 and love decorating cakes now. I'm getting ready to start playing with fondant also. Take a look at wilton.com and look at their forums. They have a recipe thread and most seem to agree on there that a marshmellow fondant tastes best. Also, go to Michael's or Hobby Lobby and buy the Wilton class 3 kit. It has a book and some starter tools to make flowers. Michael's has a 40% off coupon in the Sunday paper every week. I think the kit is around $30. These places have the Wilton classes you can take also. They are usually 1 night a week for 4 weeks. Good luck! Let me know how it goes.

I have been hooked on the wedding cake challanges. Last night I watched the one where the couple that was getting married got to pick. YIKES that chocolate thing looked RICH!!
I also was going to suggest Michaels. My girlfriend went to one of their classes and is now making really cool cakes. I think she stated with the beginning class and then went to a few more.
Have fun and post pics of your cakes !!
:joy:

Thank God I am not the only one watching those specials
I don't yet have the desire to do it, though it looks amazing and beautiful!!! But so far, watching the shows is enough!

i do the cooking here and i screwed myself by giving the ring a couple months ago. i specifically said there would be a prenup. she agreed and i just said "i don't want to be involved in the planning". (that was my 'nup)
ha, that doesn't work. now i'm going to have to practice some new cooking techniques. thanks

i don't think i could handle someone else catering or doing the cake without my supering. i'm stupid i know, but i really could care less about anything else in the wedding. lol!!!

LTS, For some reason your post reminded of when I was at a NASCAR race. At one of the souviner (sp?) trailers there was a cake shaped like a race car. I wanted to get it but there were a couple of guys at the trailer that.... well let's just say they had many more tattoos than me and both had their wallets on chains. So I did not want to look like a wimp in front of them and buy a cake. I hung around for a bit but finally wanted to get to my seat and decided I was going to look like a wimp and get the cake. When I walked up to the trailer the lady behind the trailer was telling the "..then you can go to their website and get cake refills and decals of other drivers." You know in telling this story the thought came to mind of making a race cake and covering it in fondant, now that would look cool.
Susan, We have watched the food network for a LONG time. Back when Emeril was alone in the kitchen and he was fun to watch. I do like the challenge specials, I am glad that they are doing more of them. Believe it or not we got mad at the kids ginger house one because one of the Gandmas was coiming up with all of the ideas and just telling the kid what to do. What is up with that?!!! I guess I am still not over it.
M, Ahhh yes planning a wedding. We screwed up by having a fast engagement. Basically February to May, so the planning was not much fun. Even with me always saying "That sounds good to me!" By the end we were so stressed out that it was wither have the wedding or break up, and neither of us cared which one. But we had enough money tied up in it we went ahead and got married, 16 years ago.

People spend soooo much money on weddings! I just couldn't bring myself to do it, and this is the bride talking. We were married almost 8yrs ago. I spent $60 on a discontiued wedding dress, got married at a little church that only held 35 people, and had a rockin' reception for 150 people. I was fortunate to work at a hotel at that time, so the reception only cost us $1,500. We made our own centerpieces, chose a modestly priced buffet dinner, and went with a cash bar and free beer. Almost everyone stayed until they kicked us out. It was a fabulous party! Everyone still comments on how great our wedding was. We didn't spend a fortune and I have never regretted it! I guess I should mention that we were also building our house at the same time, and most of our $ was going towards that. I couldn't justify spending tens of thousands of $ for one day of my life. JMO.

Here's my first "big" cake I did. Not perfect, but I was pretty proud of it. My husband made the stand for me. It was for his gparents 50th wedding anniversary. The colors didn't turn out true in the pic. They were a little more on the pink side. I've just been doing it for fun so far. I'm excited to try fondant.

i swear to freakin' fish. weddings are usually pretty early in the day so getting into a bar and having everyone pay for their own koolaid isn't a big deal. dj is free also.
i'm out of my mind with all this junk, i can only imagine what mary has. she may have been quick to answer when the ring came out. :hilarious
tnt,
have you tried bigger sizes and how does it work out keeping the middle fluffy? (i am a guy getting his girl btw, but i'm the stay at home dad for now).... and i cook better than anyone i know.

I'm not sure I know exactly what you mean by keeping the middle fluffy. Those cakes were 12", 10", and 8". The 12 and 10 were cut and layered. The 8" was 3" deep and I chose not to layer it. I made my roses the day before and let them dry, then placed them on the cake. I used the Wilton cone insert thingee when baking the cakes because they were so big. It helps them bake more evenly.

thanks, i'll look up that cone thing. although i do all the cooking we are not into sweets, so that's something i had no idea about. thanks for the heads up, i'm sure whoever eats the cake will appreciate it!

i'm mostly italian and mexican with the junk barbeque and salad for mary.
honestly i have no experience with cake and have never heard of the methods. i better get off my butt and start practicing. arggghhh

You should really check out wilton.com's forum. There'll be lots of good tips. I don't know when your wedding is, but I'd practice the cake before hand. I'd also recommend getting a wilton instruction book too. There are step by step instructions on lots of techniques. Good luck! Be sure to post some pics of your cakes. I love seeing others.

believe you me i've been checking that site for the last half hour or so. noone eats sweets in our household and we have no family here, so it's so far been a wine tasting sort of lick and spit thing heehee!
unfortunately i can't cook in the cake pans we had as a kid. i think they were garage saled when i left for ku.
thanks for the info though, i'm going to be wasting a lot of eggs trying this out!! :hilarious

TNT, Those are some AWESOME cakes!!! Very nice!!! I agree with you about the $$$ for a wedding. Fortunatley my wife felt the same way as me and we had a great wedding. Our honyemoon to (wait for it) Niagara Falls cost about as much as our wedding. The reason we went to Niagar Falls is beause it was so corny to do, although we did have a great time cruising around Canada.

Thanks! I love the Niagra Falls honeymoon! That's great! I'd really like to get to the point of being able to sell my cakes as a side income. I just dedicated myself to making a Care Bear cake for my cousins baby shower. I'm going to do the 3D bear cake. I'll post some pics if it turns out cool. Post some pics when you start messing around with fondant.

Ok, here's the care bear cake I did yesterday. I was fairly pleased with it. It was the first time I used the "fur" tip. It was fun. I wasnt' too happy with the eyes though. I can't ever seem to make them look right. I also started playing with some fondant roses. They were much easier to make than I thought they would be.
