Just to anwser your question is a smaller piece of the the main coral that will grow into a larger one. kinda like a plant clipping.

different corals are different some can be cut with a razor blade others need special tools like a band saw to cut them others can be snapped off. as far as stressing them it does for a little while and most recover fine. If you want to know about a specfic coral I would post a question " how do you frag this X coral.
