Would this work for fragging corals????
A rubbermaid container with a powerhead (any recommendations?) , heater and a light ( would a 24 watt pc work ?) the rubbermaid is about 8-10 inches high and planning to use reef plugs to mount the corals to.
(i want to frag corals like zoos, xenia, mashrooms ect- beginers)
Thanks,
David

I think you'll find your gonna have a harder time selling plugs than you will regular LR. lots of people hate tghe look of plugs. I myself wont buy anything on plugs (unless I can get it off the plug)

ok so maybe i will buy a piece of live rock and break it apart with a hammer or something....do you think that the lights would work ??? and would you recommend and powerhead ? maxxi jet or something?

as long as you keep it really close to the top of the water it should work though you should try for more if you can. maxxi jets are an excellent choice in powerheads. dont forget a heater. you could even use a little HOB filter like an aqua clear.

You might want to consider bare bottom. I made mine bare bottom with just a little LR rubble in it. That way you can visually see any detritus and remove manually while doing water changes.
I think frag plugs are OK for zoanthids because they will overgrow the top of it and make a nice ball. The bottom can be broken off if the person doesn't like the look at that point. I would put most other things on LR rubble. It is probably cheaper to actually buy LR rubble than to buy a big piece of LR and break it into smaller pieces. Although not every LFS has rubble for sale.

Ok thanks
..would you recommend any specie to start with , i heard mashrooms are one of the easiest and that zoos have toxic fluids and are more advanced blah blah blah......

zoos arent more advanced they are actually easier to secure than mushrooms. but they are toxic, I reccomend gloves (powder free)and saftey glasses, (yes I use them) zoos all you do is get a butter knife and lift one edge of the mat then peel it until you get as many as you want then cut the connecting tissue with a razor, pat a piece of LR dry add a smear of superglue gel about the size of the mat then pat the zoo dry on the bottom only and stick it down to the glue, it sets almost instantly, dont feel rushed they can stay out of the water for a goodly amount of time, then rinse both the original colony and the new frag in a little bucket of tank water to rinse off any pollution (from the cut) and place in your frag tank.

I agree that shrooms and zoa's are both very easy. Don't shy away from zoa's. Be careful to get underneath those polyps though. Don't cut into them because they have a hard time recovering from that.
Most leathers are easy to frag too. They can often be cut with scissors and rubber banded to a rock until they attach.

ok thanks im going to try to setup my frag tank tomorow and let it start to cycle
:happyfish .
Oh one more thing i found a rubbermaid container in my garage .
The dimansions are 24"x18"x15" do you think that it would work for smaller numbers of corals? and im going to try and find stronger lighting .

Thanks,
David

yes it would just remember the smaller you go the harder it is going to be to keep stable. evaporation and such.

I would reccomend a bare minimum of 2x 65watts if you went with dual 10k that would be plenty of light for the stuff your talking about fragging since your not going for looks just efficiency dual 10k would be just fine.

for the powerhead would the maxxi jet 400 600 or 900 (i think 1200 would be too much) do best?
Thanks alottt,
