Frozen Food vs Dry Food

So it seems the majority of reefers I've talked to (including those on this forum) generally favor frozen food for their tanks. That's not to say that they dont sometimes feed pellets or flakes but most prefer frozen. However, there are a few local reefers I know that prefer dry food with the argument that the phosphate level is lower and it sinks to the bottom so that clean up crew can get to it. I know we're all concerned with phosphates being in our water which is why a lot of reefers rinse their frozen food first. Anyways, I hear a lot of mixed opinions on frozen vs dry foods. I've heard the same argument that frozen is lower in phosphates and dry being lower in phosphates. What do you all think?

I give my fish frozen food, pellets, scallops, frozen shrimp. Just to give them a variety.

I feed mostly frozen...I DO have pellets and flake, and I toss some in once in a while as an evening snack....

I too feed mostly frozen. I sometimes feed 2 different types of pellets and for some reason no fish in my tank has gone for any flakes I've tried. Any particular reason any of you seem to favor frozen more so than pellets?

Nutritional value

Ah see now it gets interesting. Why do you think frozen food has better nutritional value? I ask because I honestly don't know.

Cause everyone else says so

LOL....as abeandlulu said...it is also closer to what they would eat in the ocean (sorta) Read the nutritional facts too.....I have looked at a few things...not too many, and not in depth enough to give you a real detailed answer...

Sadly I'm ashamed to admit that I too have just been doing it because everyone else said so.
I am sort of interested to find out if dry foods or frozen foods do pollute my tank though.

Almost all the fish in my tank right now are wild caught fish, and NONE will accept pellet or flake food so I've just given up trying.
I know the argument with phosphate levels and frozen vs dried. I've actually noticed the opposite. Whenever I've used flake food, with these fish now and with others in the past that did eat it, I always had an algae bloom no matter how much (or little) I fed. A good quality frozen food usually is going to contain more nutrition than flake (unless it's a really good blend).
Frozen fish food can also be fed to the corals, so it's got dual use.

If you get a decent brand of flake/pellets they are fortified with protein and vitamins. Much higher than frozen foods usually. Just compare the nutritional information on the labels to find out exactly what nutrition your providing. The idea that frozen is more nutitional is not always the case. Variety is best.

What if your frozen food is fortified with vitamins and such?
OR
Is the better question, which lighting is better for my tank?

I would say if your not killing your critters and fish you should keep doing what you are doing. If you start killing them then change what your doing.

YUP...I have about 10 different frozen foods....2 types of flakes, and 2 types of pellets.
As said earlier though....they get the flakes and pellets as snacks, and the frozen as their main diet
AND I will add..if you are going to use flakes or pellets get something like spectrum or Formula 2

Two reasons, have you ever read the ingredients to most dry foods? They're terrible. Some are better then others, but almost all are filler.
Second, the very nature of dry goods. How can food just sit at room temperature without spoiling, if its not over-processing, overly manufactured?

I use frozen and I rinse it. I had some spongy stuff, called formula one for tangs and formula two for the others. It got stuck in the rocks and even the CUC wouldn't eat it.
I do have raw shrimp I feed once in a while. I change up on coral foods to see what help them best. The fish are fat, healthy and happy...that's all I want.

That should be the fishes job...Anyway I did squish it up, and it got into the rock and just rotted there. Like I said, even the CUC didn't eat it. I was working on my tank one day and moved a rock to discover the yuck, I thought it was being eaten...It was like the fish were hiding it and only pretending to eat it...like my kids did their Brussels sprouts.
