Fuge: Longer or Deeper?

I have a wide variety of tanks for use. What would be better for a fuge, a longer tank or a taller on. The basic ones i have are 20g. If I look hard enough i might be able to find a 30g but i dont know if it will fit in the space i need it to.

It really doesn't matter. I guess you could go with a shallower one if you plan on having a light above it to grow algae.

thats the reason i was asking, If i have a DSB wouldnt i need a deeper tank? The DT has about 3" of sand so do i need a DSB in the Fuge? Also what would be an ideal flow rate through the 20g long tank be?

A longer tank will give more surface area for the sand bed and better waterflow through the refugium. For waterflow I'd recommend around 200gph through the tank but no powerheads.
You don't need a DSB in the refugium but 1/2" of sand will provide a diversity of pods and worms.
