As others have said get a HOB overflow have it go into you refuge, it should go pretty slow I believe so a valve might be a good thing. Then have a pump return it to your display tank.
Or if you could get it a little higher than your display you could have the side of the refuge drilled & put a bulkhead & a tube leading into your display & it would gravity feed into the. You would need a small pump pumping the water into the refuge though.
Here is what I did/doing. The refuge itself is not setup yet, but its ready to go. My display is drilled & it has a tee pipe under it. One part leads to the sump the other leads to the refuge & it has a valve on it there. Then I have my 10g refuge that is a hexagon tank so it is tall. The side is drilled way up top & has a bulkhead & a tube, then it is gravity feed into the sump next to it. If I couldn't have gravity feed it into the sump then I would have gotten a pump to pump the water into the display.
I wouldn't doubt that you could have a return & lead-out pump doing this, but most people will say that it would be a big mistake. It could be, but I guess if you tried & took some extra precautions then it could be done & operate fine.
Hope this helps.
