fun with a blue tang

i have a new tank that is fully cycled and ready for fish, i added my 2 clown fish last week and last night i tried to add my blue tang.. hes in a 45 gal now and going into a 250 gal. i really failed at catching him, he jumped and landed on a ledge in my tank thats above water level, i pushed him back down but none of us saw him go back into the tank, we were freaking out and looking behind the tank and around ,the tank has only about 20kg live rock as ive moved most of it to my other tank, couldnt see him anywhere. after a sleepless night he came out this morning!!! :) he has a little bit of ich on him due to the stress, when should i try to catch him again? im going over seas on monday for 2 weeks and really wanted to shut down my old tank before i went. what is a good way to catch him? hes very skittish and shy. im not going to use a hook.

Methods for catching a fish in a tank:
1. Drain as much water from the tank as you can, and move the rock around until you find and catch him.
2. Buy/use a fish trap
3. Research "Coke Bottle Method"
4. Where there's a will, there's a way.

If you are tearing down your tank anyway, just start draining it and moving the rock around and catch the little sucker. Shouldn't hurt anything. :D

If the fish has ich, I would QT it and treat the ich. If you put a fish with ich in the DT, you are only asking for trouble down the road.

Leave the net that you are going to catch the fish with in the tank for a day or 2. Move it around occasionally. Eventually move it more and more. Slowly start taking rocks out and putting them in buckets full of water... to keep them from dying off. Then, try catching the tang during feeding time. I usually use this method because it reduces a lot of stress and commotion for both you and your fish.
Better yet, try to hand-feed your fish. I hand-feed my 2 tangs and grouper when I have time. It definitely makes situations like this a heck of a lot easier.
Last but not least, take Gemmy's advice. Put the fish in a QT.... as with what she said, putting the fish in the DT with ich is asking... more like begging... for trouble down the road.
Good luck catching your fish,

How often does the "ich" come and go? As Florida Joe stated, it may be sand you are seeing. It could very well be ich. The life cycle of ich has a couple of stages including one where it falls off the fish. IMO, if the fish could possibly have ich, I would QT and eradicate the ich from my system.

Time frame for this particular event strongly suggests it’s not ick. Sometimes treating for a phantom disease does more harm than good
