i just wanted to bump this thread back up and do a little update.
currently im having a little bit of an algea outbreak. it kinda resembles diatoms but it is acting a bit different.....it covers the walls of the tank, the sand, and the rocks. it is brown in color and resembles diatoms. im doing frequent water changes, but no results yet. i turned the lights out for 2 days and the algea appeared to be gone....then after the lights were on for a few hours it came back and covered everything!!! im not really sure what to do, but im not gonna get my next mantis until the algea clears up.
if anyone has adivice on the mystery algea just let me know
ps: im only using ro water and i havnt been feedig the tank

im kinda wondering if my mantis dying caused a 2nd cycle.....then again, my first cycle wasnt even as bad as this and ive replaced all of the water in this tank several times over since the mantis died
i have a few shrooms, zoos, and a ric in the 3 gallon right now so i might move em to the 12 for a little bit....but i also dont want to introduce algea into that tank.
hmmmm, what to do

im still battling this disgusting algea stuff. ive been considering redoing the entire tank. im gonna wait another week or so and see if it begins to get any better....if not im gonna throw all the rock in a bucket with a pump in it for a week or more and pray the algea dies. i would prolly change the sand to white......and scrub the whole tank down completely. i dont really know what else to do especially cause all of the params seem ok.

what kind of rock did u get, i got the best kind for my nano it was cured it was in my tank within a hour of coming out of another and i still got a algae bloom as long as u don't use tap water u should be fine, i would just do alot of water changes and while it doin scrub the rock a little with the hose u suck water out and u should be fine. u will get a pods increase that will eat it up also. my tank is a month old and its still has algae growing. people say a tank is truly mature at 6 monthz maybe u have to wait a bit longer, stick it out
when i do a water change i remove my LR and stir up the sand so all the dirty can flow into the sump or get puled out with my water change.

i had a lot of algae in one of my tanks and i just took a toothbrush and scraped the algae off of everything
then i went through and siphoned off all the algae pieces
i had to do this twice to get rid of all the algae
the white sand would look good if you decide to do it
a background would look good also
i put one on my 3 gallon and it makes the tank look a lot bigger for some reason
idk just a suggestion

yeah....im gonna try to stick it out. i did a 75% water change....scrubbed all of the rock, filter, thermometer ect... i may end up changing the sand though. not sure yet.

crash, yeah im running black moon sand also. (sry it took me so long to reply. ive been busy)
i left the lights off for over a week now...the mushrooms still look ok, zoos look like they might open up again also. most of the nasty algea seems to be gone, but the water seems a little cloudy probably from the die off of most of the algea. im gonna continue to leave the lights off for a few more days and then do a massive water change (hopefully about 85-90%). then maybe i can soon get another mantis.

things are now looking a lot better now...i just did a 1 gallon water change (that was all the RO water i had), the water looks clearer and im running carbon too. im still gonna keep my fingers crossed and only have the lights on for a short time till everything is ok. i would post pics but nothing has changed at all except i pulled out some macro algea

is chemi-pur the same product as chemi-clean red slime remover? i used the chemiclean once in my 12 gallon and it worked wonders...but it didnt do anything to help the 3 gallon. im guessing that the algea i had was not in the red slime family
