Glass tops or open tank?

What are some opinions on keeping your tank top open or having glass tops on it? I have a 135 reef with fish and I have glass tops on it. I was adding a coral yesterday so iI took the tops off to wash them and it just seems like the tank gets SO much more light with them off. I know I will have more evaporation, I already have to add a gallon of top off water every other day as it is. So could I just get some opinions. Please

Do you think that my serpent starfish will be ok, or will I find it behind the tank?

whats the risk of splash hitting the lights? I have a 55g that has a canopy on it that I mounted the flourescents to. they are maybe 6in above the water

what happens when the float gets stuck?
HMMMM...I would have to hope it never happens....first of all the water only trickles out....and as much as I stare at my sump/fuge...I'd notice it.
