I have a yellow spotted goby and I love him he stays in his little hole and protects it. He found a spot he likes and messes with the sand around it. Oher than that he don't mess with the rest of the tank

Honesty the sand sifting star is just as bad... where's Bang when you need him?? Anyway, all of the true sand "sifters" sift the sand eating all the tiny sand dwelling critters. A healthy active sand bed will be full of life... anything that disrupts that is harmful IMO.

Well I need one until I get something better. I have diatoms on the sand I know whats causing it but it cant be fixed now it has to wait :( . But I dont have anything live in my sand I started with caribsea live sand "bacteria" and I got some from a friend here in missouri but it didnt add anything. Since there is nothing to eat wouldnt it be fine.
Also you say its harmful then how come you have a sand sifting goby?

I don't... I have a Red Banded Goby (Stonogobiops nematodes) which is not a sand sifter.
How much LR do you have?? Most of the sand bed critters hitchhike in on LR unless you get real "live" sand for someone.
A Fighting or a Queen Conch would clean up your sand bed in short order... and they would not feed on the sand bed critters.

I don't believe Cukes bother the sand all that much. They eat so slowly that any critters can just get out of the way. I also don't believe a trip through a Sea Cumber is fatal for many sand bed animals.

Guy, what's your opinion on sand sifting stars and gobys?? Are they a threat to a normal sized sand bed??

I like that bed nice and deep. Im plannin on adden some more sand myself. Alot of ppl keep the gobies and cukes its the stars they worrie about. Not becuase they kill stuff im sure they might but becuase they will end up eating everything in the sand and starve to death.

I have a golden sleeper head goby. Its a cute little fish to watch b/c it is always out in the open!...just make sure you have a turkey baster b/c you are gonna need it to keep the rocks clean of sand...my little bugger gets sand all over everything...my GSM clown finally started to chase him away from his BTA b/c he always get sand all over the place...I am still trying to figure out if he is worth all the work it takes to clean up after him everyday!!

A single Sand Sifting Starfish will completely decimate a medium sized sand bed in a few months.
For sifting gobies it depends. If they take food supplements, many will, then there's a good chance they will pick a spot to sift and not venture too far. They have the capability to wipe out a sand bed if they decide to sift the entire bed so it's quite risky.

Thanks Bang Guy... hopefully with that everyone will get the picture.
Everyone needs to remember that a truly "functional" sand bed is flourishing with life.
