Going to kick my Octopus BH 300-F out the door.....

I am adjusting the collection cup at least 2 or 3 times a day. Is that normal? Am I doing something wrong? My water level, surface skimmer over intake port and everything stays the same. The bubble level constantly changes.

How old is it? It takes some time to break in. Is it in your sump? Are you sure that the water level is remaining constant?

It is 2 months old. It is a HOB. Yes water level is constant excluding evaporation which shouldn't matter I would think.

I mean it skims a alot. Collection cup is always dark green or brown. Smells like Poop (yeah I smell it everytime I empty it) I don't have a problem with bubbles. No bubbles in my water coming out. Sorry. LOL
Oh yeah it's Scott.

My remora still makes some bubbles but nothing I can't deal with. It seems to skim pretty good but lately it has been skimming a lot so I had to raise the collection cup. The cup always seems to fill up when I am at work. I'm trying the prodibio products and I wonder if that is what is causing the extra skimming lately.

I am still lusting for my first skimmer; I've been leaning towards the remora. Would you recommend it? And, having never used a skimmer, I don't know, but wouldn't more skimming being done mean there is more that needs to be skimmed? Do you mean more gunk is being collected, or that the skimmer is being more active?

I’ve had a remora pro for 7 years now and it is the only skimmer that I have ever used so I can’t compare it to other skimmers. I usually get good foam but there are times where I don’t get so much and other times when I get a lot. I know certain additives can make a skimmer go crazy like red slime remover. The reviews for the most part are pretty good on the remora. I would recommend getting the biggest powerhead that will work with it. I think the rio 1400 and mag drive 3 pumps are recommended for it and I would go with the mag 3.

OK, remora pro with mag 3 it is, thanks! From descriptions, I also think I should get the version with the drain fitting (and setup a overflow catcher).
Thanks again!

And just be on the safe side and do more research so you don't just rely on me.

There are plenty of reviews out there so read through them and then make your decision. I wish I had gone with the drain fitting but I didn't think about it when I bought mine.

Oh I've read reviews and specs until my eyes bleed, I just needed that last little nudge, thanks again!

Play with it. See if you can set up a siphon from the collection cup to an outside bottle. If it is skimming well, then it is doing its job.

I think its something with how the skimmer is initially started. I've had the octopus hob 100F running on my 40 breeder for about 10 months, and it took nearly 6 months for me to figure out how to get it to work properly. I'll try to explain the best that I can:
1. Fill up the skimmer with water to the top of the pump (or maybe as much as you can).
2. While holding your finger over the air inlet hose (which is connected to the silencer for mine), plug it in. This will start siphoning water in from the tank.
3. The water level in the skimmer will drop, as it gets to the bottom of the pump, release your finger from the silencer.
4. The skimmer will begin to cycle water through it, and the water level in the skimmer should increase until it submerges the pump (halfway to 3/4 submerged for mine).
5. Let it run for a minute or two.
6. Unplug it!
7. Let the water levels even out in each chamber, (so wait about 10-20 seconds).
8. Plug it back in.
Before I figured any of this out, the bubbles would barely reach the bottom of collection cup. This initializing technique helped increase the amount of bubbles so my collection cup is almost at the top, and a stable amount of bubbles are output.
There's something about getting this skimmer's siphon working first, then unplugging/plugging it back in... hope it helps.

Another I'm unhappy with my skimmer story...are there any good ones out there at all?

My problem is the bubbles aren't consistent. 1 minute they will be low and then the next minute they are bubbling to much. It is skimming green and brown crud.
