Going without TV and computer for a week

Hello guys and gals,
So, pretty much every year when I find myself on the computer more and plopping down in front of the TV to get my mind off of things, I decide to take a week off from all electronics. (except my phone and car radio). I do this to try to get back to a more simple way of living and to realign my life and get a fresh perspective. It really helps me clear my mind and re-prioritize myself. I also find that doing this really helps my chronic insomnia.
Let me explain the phone - I just got a new Iphone, as you all know... but I am using it to start up this little business that I got going. My wife is pregnant, and of course she will need to get in contact with me at a moments notice. In the past, I have done it without a phone too, but in this case, I can't. :(
I usually read books that I've been putting off... doing chores that I've been needing to do, weed the garden and put in a few extra hours at work here and there. I catch up on reading my saltwater books and research, I take care of my tank(s) more often and readjust everything and stare in wonder at the creatures growing in them. I rearrange all of my paperwork and update stuff...
Essentially, I get stuff done.
Does anyone else do this on occasion? Am I just an odd ball? Would you be willing to try it for a week? A day?
Tomorrow will be the first day of my week off from tv and computer. So, you probably won't see me post again until next Sunday, after today. It's just something I have to do. Does anyone else feel like this?

TV free for nearly 8 years. Best decision we ever made. Occasionally I take a hiatus from the PC, but it's where I get news and talk to family in Missouri. We have no other family out here in Ca.

Interesting SoCal. I don't have any cable or antenna TV. I used to have NetFlix off of my XBox, but we were getting it through a couple of friends, and they cut it off. :( so I've been putting in DVD's as background noise. I got tired of watching the news ... it's always bad stuff all the time. And reality shows are a bunch of junk. Not even the science/discovery channel has anything informative anymore.
Doing without computer for me is going to be the hard part. Staying away from here especially so.

Since your wife is preggers, I am betting you are going weeks without from her.
So now you want to cut out TV and Internet.
Just join a Monastery and become a Monk...atleast that way they give you some cool robes and a hat thingy.
Darth ( and you think I am strange) Tang

Couldn't you just limit yourself to an hour each day...what if we need you?
I suppose we can survive for a week...
Do I feel like this is a good idea....Yes, but I'm not willing to give up my computer ...I even do my banking by computer, or give up my TV at night.

I rely on the internet for banking and other account monitoring, too. Giving up the PC would be tough.
We have a TV, but like you, have no outside input. We occasionally watch movies and have a Wii that collects dust. We only use it to tell us how fat and out of shape we are. We still have a tank running in the living room so it's not dead silent in there. There are a few Christian radio stations that we tune in. AIR1 radio KWVE and the Fish out of LA. Morning shows on secular radio have become a cesspool so we steer clear of them.
It may have absolutely nothing to do with it, but our youngest daughter is at the top of her class, is taking Algebra1 in 7th grade, and is in the student leadership program at her IB magnet school. My older two kids struggled in school and we had to fight with them to get homework done. We had full satellite subscription and listened to secular radio while they were growing up. If I could go back in time and change one thing, it would be the TV/Radio influence that I allowed into our home. The most common factor shared among my youngest daughter's most successful friends is that they do not have cable/satellite TV.

socal - Very true. I grew up with TV, but I still got mostly all A's. I guess it just depends on the student? If I didn't watch so much TV when I was growing up, I would probably have done much better though. I listen to the old country and new country music most of the time. I can't get into the jibberish pop songs and rap songs on air. I listen to talk radio too sometimes. For the past three or four years, I haven't really been in the mood to listen to music. Only thing I play at home is some Johnny Cash and Bob Marley. lol. Hopefully all my kids will be like your youngest daughter. She sounds like a good student.

That's a good a good idea snakeblitz, but I couldn't do it. We manage our whole business from our computer.
Some people can't do it because of work. I understand that. I don't use a computer for work - so I have no excuse to get on the computer for the next week. I AM going to be checking my e-mails periodically for side work.
Here's a couple of other challenges:
1. Put your credit cards away for a month in a drawer and forget about em'. Pay cash or debit for everything that you have to have and bills. (I already do this one, but it would be hard for a lot of people.)
2. Don't eat out for an entire month. No fast food, no sit down restaurants. Just homemade meals.

gottcha all beat..... I haven't watched T.V. for months now. (even loosing out on my S.D. Chargers and Colts games.... oh well. Computer, not so much unless school for homework and research, and of coarse this place. My phone.... hate it, and well, since the wife and I got our tanks, we just sit around and stare at them!
I take that back, sorry. Every now and then I will youtube stuff and watch the History channel or Discovery. So..... it's rare.
Don't use the credit cards unless it's an emergency and we eat out on date nights only..... Every other friday, well tonight as a matter of fact.
(I'm cheap)

I absolutely love those two challenges. I am going to have to try to enforce those around my house!
