Goniopora Green question

I just purchased a green goniopora. Did i screw up? Is this a flower pot? I'm such the newb!! :scared: SWF says this one is moderate to care for while i have others "torch and frogspawn" SWF sez difficult. Others say expected life in captivity is <12 months.
I've read all the warnings hear about "flower pots". sheesh.................................newb, newb, newb

yes it is a flowerpot....but dont be disheartened....I have had mine now for about 6 monts and it is doing well. although it may not last, so far it is outstanding. mine seems to really blow up after a good feeding of cyclopeeze and I also keep it toward the top for better lighting...good luck :jumping:

Yes, sorry to say, goniopora is a difficult coral to have long term. 12 mths is good if you can keep it healthy that long. Some do claim sucess w/ them so hopefully you can get some tips.

Here ya go.... It took about 45 minutes to extend. I've been reading and reading and reading. This one will survive!!! I just need the reef jedi to add his .02. Where's your input wax?

I wish my two had short tentacles like yours. Mine are really full and long and take up a LOT of tank space because they sting.

Nope. All the tentacles are connected by a membrane at the base, so feeding one tentacle is like feeding all of them. When I have time I take squid or some other seafood, chop it up very finely (about 1mm pieces) and feed the polyps/tentacles with that.
This method of feeding takes forever, but it is very satisfying and probably very good for the health of your flowerpot.

Hey mud,
If you take a sharp steak knife and finely shave the seafood (shrimp, scallop, squid, etc...) while it is still frozen, instead of chopping it, it makes it a lot easier to create super small chunks.

I've tried both methods and they seem about the same to me... the part I hate is actually getting the pieces to stick to the polyps on the end of the tentacles. There are some days where it is very frustrating, even with the filters and powerheads off.

Make sure you spot feed it meaty foods and dose phyto. Many aquarists do not spot feed the meaty foods and I think that MAY be why flowerpot corals don't live past the 8 month mark in tanks.
