anyone know of a good fish that is affordable to buy that would swim in a school of 3 or 4 and fit in a 55 gallon? would be the only fish in it by the way.

I would discourage trying a school of Banggai. Unless they are all female you will probably end up with only two after a few years.

Pejama Cardinal's IMO would be good. I have had good success with them.

Looks like I need to take a drive to DC

Firefish are excellent shoalers.
But so are green and blue chromis
Cardinals are ok but they sometimes they are boring to look at
THEY DONT MOVE MUCH!
Firefish and Chromis are excellent: Easy to feed, peaceful and active!

I love my firefish...Their dorsals flipping around all the time really add a lot of movement to the tank...

I'm not convinced that they are a good schooling fish but here's a pic of the late (RIP) Sparky, Purple Firefish.

Purple Queen Anthias is a good choice for a schooling fish. The colour of them is absolutely beautiful but they are somewhat costly.
