Good Texas has worst-ranked food stamp program

HMMM...I don't necessarily see this as a good thing...BELIEVE ME...I have seen the system abused, BUT what about the people who are really having a rough time. Because TX has an inadequate amount of "food stamp" processors some needy children and families have to go hungry

H.E.B., Randalls and other grocery stores are missing out on nearly $1 billion a year in food sales because Texas does not even come close to the national average in enrolling eligible people for food assistance, Concannon said.
What?!? No one is yelling at grocery stores for their government handouts???

Help is always there for those that truly need it, hell my wife's parents were on food stamps for awhile when she was a kid, one of the best days of their life was the day they didn't need them anymore....Having lived in South Carolina for 6 years, I saw the ridiculous abuse of the system by people that have no desire to better their lives so they wouldn't need government help anymore.

The way I look at it people who are really in need will be seeking out the assistance. Those who qualify and don't take advantage are either making money off the books or getting help from other sources so where's the problem? It isn't a secret there is a program called food stamps for the needy. I don't think we need to spend even more money to hire someone to talk people into taking it.

I've heard the stories and actually seen a couple examples,
I'll never forget when I lived in Idaho I was at the grocery store and the guy in front of me separated a couple bottles of wine and a few other items from his groceries. Paid for them with food stamps and pulled out a wad of cash to pay for the wine and stuff. Once the guy left I watched him walk out and get into a pretty nice car. I made a comment and the clerk looked around to make sure nobody was close and said "If I got my food free I could spend 38 dollars a bottle for wine too"
My Step dad's kids (I don't claim these losers) were both running scams to get food stamps by not claiming to be married so the wife and kids qualified. I asked how they didn't get caught and they said the people didn't have time to check.
The one was so stupid she was selling the stamps for 50 cents on the dollar to buy cigarettes and whatever. I asked why she didn't just use the food stamps for food and save the cash for the other stuff. Uhhh, oh, I never thought of that. Not her or the loser she was married to could figure that out. True story and scary because these people bred.

"Texas does not have enough workers to process food stamp applications and is one of only three states that fingerprints applicants for the food assistance. Texas also imposes a cumbersome assets test that is time consuming, complicated and impedes the effort to help desperate and hungry people, Concannon said."
This sounds like a great idea to me. Make sure that the people that are requesting the aid are who they say they are and actually need it...

That isn't why Children go hungry... People need to have some self responsibility, whether it is not unzipping, forgoing unessesary expenses. or going to school... The VAST majority of the poor in this country are that way by choice...

Very true, although i wouldn't say vast, I'd say many, but not close to majority.
