You are right Sue. I quit a year ago, as of July 15. I was surprised how easy quitting was when I just said to myself, "I don't want to smoke anymore and I won't smoke anymore"-that was the easy part for me though. The hard part was after about 2 weeks, I became depressed. I felt like I had lost something important and it took a few days to realize it was the smoking that had caused the depression. I thought I was the only person that happened to because I'd never read or heard of it happening before.

I so wish someone had warned me about the depression because I too was really confused by it and whenever I tried to talk about it to others they would look at me as if I were nuts or just laugh. People warn you about the physical withdrawal symptoms and the cravings and the weight gain but they don't talk about the depression and they SHOULD. Why WOULDN'T you be depressed to lose something that has been such an important part of your life? I actually even missed my smoking "toys"..... the fancy lighters, the leather cigarette cases, the ashtrays, etc. It was all part of who I was, and all of a sudden it was gone.
Had someone told me it was "normal" to be crying and depressed it might have been easier to take, so be forewarned, Teresa...... you may slip into a depression but it OK and it will pass.

Teresa, I smoked for 22yrs and this is what helped me when I quit smoking. Whenever the desire to have a cigarette come over me I would think to myself, "Why do I need a cigarette? I'm not a smoker!" Then I would concentrate on something that needed to be done or go get a job started, anything to take my mind off from the urge, if only for a few minutes. Next thing you know, another day without a cigarettte. Just remember "Your not a smoker!!"
You have to change the way you think about yourself. A Non smoker.
It helped me anyway... Along with the patch, and pill!! Now I'm 8yrs, 2months, & 6days into my non smoking life. One day at a time!! ;)
Good luck, and welcome to one more day of being a non smoker!!

So did you finally run out? You know, are you smoke free? If so, how long.
The urges are hell. Like I always tell people, sometimes it is all you can do to get to the next mintue. Then it is minute by minute, pretty soon you are to the next hour and then soon you have gone the whole day..........
