This story brought tears to my eyes. I'm tired of politics and arguing. This police officer makes me so proud to be an American.

Yep, I am one who believe that there are many unsung heroes. In fact, probably each of here have committed random acts of kindness in one way or another. Its only the bad stuff that gets attention though.

I'm moving out to the boonies to finish my house. No interwebs for a while after today. Busy last day in civilization, may not get back on here before internet is turned off. See you(your posts, anyway) all later. I hope I can be more like this officer all the time, not just the holidays. I wish everyone here Merry Christmas and happy holidays of non-Christian origins, too.

Have a great holiday yourself! Hopefully, your home in the wilderness will get internet soon.

Not to be a damp rag here but why didn't the guy have shoes in the first place? Did someone steal them? Did he trade them for booze or drugs? And what's to keep the same thing from happening to the nice new boots. Homeless people do steal from each other and this guy seems like such an easy going character I don't think he would put up much of a fight. What the cop did was a great gesture but he should have bought the guy some nice wool socks and a pair of tennis shoes, the guy would be a lot more likely to hang on to them than the nice boots. But we can hope. Great story in any case.

Always with the negativity Moriarity. Pessimism seems to be one of your better traits. Let's be stereotypical. All homeless people are leeches to society. Too lazy to work, no ambition, and sucking money from taxpayers. Who cares what his story is? This was a simple act of kindness from one human being to another. Next they'll ask this cop what his political party affiliation is. Hannity and O'Reilly probably claim he's one of Obama's drones.

You ever work with any homeless folk? I have. I've seen what happens to these people. I'd be willing to bet that poor guy wont have the nice boots a week. Those who don't have substance abuse issues themselves tend to fall victim to those who do. Like I said, I've seen it. They just don't turn lose of shoes and that was in a lot more mild climate than New York. Nobody made any comment about the guy being lazy or a leach but you. Based on the story I said he seemed to be an easy going kind of guy that probably wouldn't put up much of a fight if someone tried to take his stuff. But you just couldn't wait to make an ignorant political statement.

I contribute time at the local SAMMinistries Shelter every month. Helped push forward the Haven For Hope initiative here in San Antonio, so yes I work with "less than fortunate" individuals alll the time. I've heard their stories first hand, and understand the complications they've had in their lives, some no fault of their own.
Who knows what this guys attitude would be once he literally got back on his feet. The cop had to help him put on the socks and boots because he was too weak to do it himself. Interesting that soon after he got the boots on, the guy got up and disappeared into the night. Will he keep the boots, or will he simply walk down to the local quik stop and barter the boots for a bottl of MD 20/20? Guess we'lll never know. This story was simply an example of someone more fortunate helping out someone who was less fortunate, and showing how human compassion still exists in this country. You're the one throwing your little "damp rag" on the inspirational story, trying to stereotype the typical homeless person, not me. All I did is interject a little sarcasm into your bigoted theories.

You guys are hilarious! I don't think anyone was being biased. But there are the facts of life about being homeless where substance abuse and thievery figure prominently.
The point was on the good hearted cop. The destiny of the gift is something no one knows.

Looks like reefraff was right on with this one. But this isn't about what happened to the shoes really, but about the kind cop.

I took nothing away from the cops gesture in my original post. It's just SOME people want to make everything about D vs R LOL!
I hope the guy just stashed the boots for safekeeping but GIVEN MY FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE I fear that isn't the case.

How can anyone be out and about in the freezing cold without shoes....
He could just scuff and muddy them up so that they blend in with the scenery.

Don't know. He told the Times he stashed them. If the guy was able to think rationally he probably wouldn't be on the streets (there are shelters for those who will follow the rules) so maybe they are hidden away.

I used to monitor contracts that shelters had with the state. Believe it or not, of the ones I monitored, there was always empty bedspace. Why? Because the requirements for getting in is sobriety and seeking work and that was not the goal of many homeless folk.
