Ophiura, you forgot to mention Rabbit in your list
What about a bunny or a hare? I hear they make excellent and loyal pets

We used to breed lapins! I'm assuming that's what they were because we called them French Lops. They were such good pets, except for Clyde. We never hit it off.

Susan, did not know you were married. Congrats!!! Is it too late to send a present? Yes I would be willing to paint your living room but you know that would require a trip to Home Depot for 2 things. I would come back with 6 things and forget 1 of the 2 things that I went there for.
Your list reminds me of a New Year's eve, My wife and daughter came running and screaming up the stairs. They had seen a rat in the garage and of course it was up to me to take care of it. The best part was that my wife was the one screaming the loudest and she beat my daughter up the stairs. So I think I am pretty sure in making the decision to eleminate mice and rats from the list. After I get permission of course.

:D

Its never to late to send a gift of LPS, softy, zoos or stars. :D It has been several years though now. Hard to believe. Actually more than several :scared:
I LOVE rats. I think they are terrific pets but VERY smart. VERY VERY smart, and constantly plotting against their captors. So maybe not a good idea. Why I like mice: unlike at least gerbils, they will not jump out of your hands. I even had some get out of a cage and walk around the top (there was "evidence" and then must have just gone back in because there was nothing the could reach to climb down on. Handy to have. But I doubt I will convince you, or maybe you wife more likely, of their advantages. :D
Have you considered a Rabbit?

OK, are reptiles in or out?

Sorry about the delay, modem problems. Well Susan I was planning to send the univeral gift of cash, but you asked for frags. That would be no problem but when I posted for the sharks to show their tanks you were conspicuously absent. So since I do not have the actual proof that you have a tank I guess I will just have to keep my zoos here for now.
I am working on the rabbit thing. Case in point we are also looking at getting another puppy. I saw a cute St. Bernard. The obvious answer was no way are you kidding. Today my wife said that she saw the same puppy that I saw and wouldn't it be cool to have a big ole dog like that around the house.
We are looking for something larger than a gerbil or hamster because my son will be a little rough with whatever we get for him. Although we can teach him to be kind he does not have that understanding and it has to be taught to him.
Oh yeah reptiles are out! We are looking for something that is cute and cuddly and that he can take out of the cage and that can sleep in his room with him.

I can vouch for Ophiura's tank being a five star resort for assorted zoos and various other frags.

No, not really...but its coming along slowly but surely. For several years I had 2 smaller tanks, and no money to actually put into it. Not to mention I worked with tanks all day and just kinda "didn't care" once I got home. That was also the period where I disappeared from this board. So here is a relatively recent pic. Its changed a bit since then. I actually did some cleaning. In several more months (especially after anticipated pay increase) I will be rather happy I think. Its pieced together with the help of generous people like Molamola :)

I know this is not going to be popular, but I've had guinea pigs and I've got 4 rabbits now.. My vote would be to get 2 pet rats (don't say eeewwww!!) They are the best little rodent type pet you can get-if you can get past their tails.. Do some research on them and you will see--they have the personality more like a dog, they are much cleaner and they cost less than 4 bucks.. I had some with 2 yo twins and despite getting smushed and pinched and pulled they never bit or got aggressive.. (you need 2 because they are too social to have alone) Just my .02. They also love to be handled an can be trained to come to thier name when called...

When I saw that picture I just started laughing out loud. Had to take care of some stuff before I could reply, opened this thread again and I am still chuckling about that picture.
2many see my 4:30 post to see why there is now way in he!! that we are getting a rat. No offense meant and that is cool if they work out for you, but if you saw my girls (my wife and my daughter) screaming and running up the stairs and then literally standing in the middle of the room still sreaming and shaking, well that is enough for me to say no.
You know O you reminded me of the lfs I used to go to. It is a man and wife that run it by themselves, I was surprised to find out that they have a tank at home. I ficured they would be sick of it and the last thing they would want after spending 10 hours working with fish would be a tank in their house. Especially if you knew them. A bit odd they are.

I was waiting for that line!! :D Sigh, I did have a rabbit like that though

Scotts,
First, of course, I am glad to see someone also second the "rat" nomination. LOL. Tell your wife and daughter to butch up  Rats are probably smarter than several people I know. And very clean. Molamola and I both used to work at the same LFS. I think that one owner did have tanks and unloaded them all, and the other didn't. But when you were at your store from like 10am to 10pm, what is the use of having a tank at home? When I was an aquarist at an aquarium, however, I think everyone had tanks at home. Mine just fell into, um, "states" that also related to my lack of any disposable income whatsoever at the time. Also intense bitterness. Yes, that hurt them also.

Well not sure if anyone cares but I will mention it here for closure. We took my son to look at Guinea Pigs and rabbits. There is a local store where you can play with them. Our final verdict was...... neither one. Did not realize how sharp their claws are. My son held a couple, got pricked by their claws and that was that.
Oh and Susan I told my wife about what you wrote and for her to butch up, I think the only words she used that I can mention here were .......up...........you.

Oh great, well that will make for a tense gathering should we ever meet. Thanks muchly. I've been sitting here trying to fill in the words....
Still, they are nice. Its not like I was suggesting those hissing cockroaches. I have some standards.

So, other than "dog" are there any other options? You could, though, just clip the nails. Long nails are easily addressed.

If you are not careful you are going to get the full story. Our main option right now is to get a kitten. I know I know they have claws also but they are not out all the time like a GP or a rabbits. Plus we do not want to mess with the claws of an animal that Daniel might not like at all. So since you surprised me that you are married I have to ak if you have any kids. It really would be a lot easier to explain if you did. Maybe the hissing cockroach might be our best bet, as long as they don't have any claws......

No, I don't have kids yet. :D So that explains it, right? LOL!
I have to hear, throw in a story about Molamola, who I am proud to call my friend. People may think she is crazy, but, in this story at least, she is my hero. This happened yesterday.
Mola was driving on big scary I-10. She and other cars swerved to miss hitting a kitten in the road. She got off, came back around, parked, and ran out and saved that kitten. That is one lucky kitten  And I owe Mola some new flip flops since she sacrificed them instead of the kitten :D
I love cats. I have 3. I would beg never to get the cat declawed if it becomes an issue. They have cute rubber claw covers that you can glue on, but if you get a cat young enough and play with its feet so it gets used to having its claws trimmed, it doesn't become so much of an issue. I think a cat is a great idea :D
