i use the api kit to measure the alk, which seems to be accurate.

I have no idea why you get inflated numbers. User error, dirty vials, old kits, improper storage....who knows. I know that if I have even the smallest amount of left over trace chemicals from previous tests in the vial, the readings are very skewed, and inflated. Perhaps the vials are not being kept 100% clean. When I'm done testing I immediately rinse them out with hot water, then they get a vinegar bath. This keeps them brand new.
Price doesn't necessarily dictate quality. API is an American company whereas the other 2 brands you listed are based in Europe and have to be imported; hence the higher price. Funny you use an API kit for you dKh. I have one as well and it's accurate, as it reads the same as my elos dKh kit. I am in no way meant that the API brand, as a whole, is the best. I'm saying the Ca kit, specifically, is a very good kit and has awesome reviews and I find it very consistent my self. In fact, you are the first person I've heard express disdain towards it. I guess we are going to have to agree to disagree on this one.
