this is the first time in 10 years i've heard anyone say api kits are the best. i wonder why salifert and elos kits are so expensive, and you can buy a reefmaster test kit from api for under 25 dollars.
so, you are telling me that all three kits we checked the calcium levels with were wrong?
my api test kit tells me that my calcium is so high that it can't even get a reading. there is no way this is possible. it's the same with the other two test kits.
the salifert kit gives me a 550 or so reading, same as the studies show on -- and oceanic salts.
i use the api kit to measure the alk, which seems to be accurate.
i understand it's not personal. you can disagree with me if you like.

I have no idea why you get inflated numbers. User error, dirty vials, old kits, improper storage....who knows. I know that if I have even the smallest amount of left over trace chemicals from previous tests in the vial, the readings are very skewed, and inflated. Perhaps the vials are not being kept 100% clean. When I'm done testing I immediately rinse them out with hot water, then they get a vinegar bath. This keeps them brand new.
Price doesn't necessarily dictate quality. API is an American company whereas the other 2 brands you listed are based in Europe and have to be imported; hence the higher price. Funny you use an API kit for you dKh. I have one as well and it's accurate, as it reads the same as my elos dKh kit. I am in no way meant that the API brand, as a whole, is the best. I'm saying the Ca kit, specifically, is a very good kit and has awesome reviews and I find it very consistent my self. In fact, you are the first person I've heard express disdain towards it. I guess we are going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

so i just purchased a bucket of reef crytal. so if i can see any changes, along with good readings than ill go with reef crystal for alittle. if not then ill go to tropic marin and try again....but i like what i hear from people about reef crystal....

That's not true at all!! My Calcium is 480 and I use Reef Crystals.
I've used it for nearly five years and mine is nowhere near that either.
Also not a big fan of the brown slimy deposit on my mixing bucket...

I'm not saying it's a bad salt. I use it, and a lot of other people do and love it. But in a reef (especially a SPS dominated reef like mine) you need calcium, and I'm not getting 480 from just the salt.
There are some variables. Not every bucket will test the same, and not every test will test the same. That being said none of the past few buckets I've used had that much calcium.
All my LFS' stock is -- and IO, and I can't justify paying more for something like TM or Oceanic, and then pay shipping.
Edit: I guess R C refers to that other forum. In this case I was referring to ReefCrystals.

oceanic is only 5 bucks more than reef crystals at TFP. it must be about a 2.5 hour ride for you, but if you go on the sale day and buy multiple buckets, you could probably make it affordable.

i use IO but am thinking about buying Oceanic when my current bucks runs out.
and for the test kits. i have two API test kits. and i test every thing twice. but every thing gives me to totally different readings. like for my Nitrates when i tested it two days ago one test said 5 ppm and the second test said 80 ppm. so i took a water sample to my LFS where they have American Marine Pinpoint aquarium controllers and monitors. and it said my nitrates where 10 ppm.

Well the tank is back home in Rochester, NY but thanks anyways

I'm starting up another tank this summer hopefully. I'll try Oceanic with that one and see if I notice a significant difference between that and my 55 which I'll keeping using R C in.

I think it also depends on where your tank is at.
In a well-established reef tank with many cal/mag-consuming inhabitants, maybe a product like Oceanic is good (depleted water gets changed with water very high in calcium/magnesium).
But for someone just starting out (like me), something like Tropic Marine Pro Reef makes more sense because of the calcium range (420-450).

I had two bad patches of reef crystals in a row, and am not happy. Low calcium (350) and it mixes horribly. Always seems to precipitate if you add just the slightest bit too much and always has tons of trash that never mixes in. I used TM Pro when I only had a 29gal and just did 10gals changs a month, but for the 100gals in water changes a month I do now, I'd be in the poor house.
I've used Coralife before, and was very happy with it. Priced right with ReefCrystals, until I found out about the whole excessive Lithium in Coralife. Has anyone heard of the Lithium issue or have any comments on it?

pro reef's calcium is over 400? i was under the impression it was in the mid 3's.
Sorry, I was going by the chart higher-up in this thread. I'm still using IO and dosing calcium, but I'm looking to change brands. After further online research, looks like TM is indeed in the mid-300s. Thanks for pointing that out.

I stopped using reef crystals Because of the low calcium levels and based on an analysis done back in 07 by Aquariumwatertesting.com Coralife seemed to have one of the best overall ratings, I have been using it for about a year now with no problems, I have not heard anything about the high Lithium issues.

That was probably my last bucket of R¢. Would like to try Oceanic, but not really that popular in my area.
For Coralife, Google "high lithium in Coralife salt" It's eye-opening if I could find if it's due or not?
