Has anyone used Vaseline for a quick fix on a seal?

I'm getting a bursts' of bubbles from my HOT Magnum filter, and I'm thinking it's from the seal. For a temporary fix I was told I could use vaseline to help it seal better. Will it affect my water at all?

one caveat is that it should only be used short term, as petroleum-based products will begin to break many plastics and rubbers down over time, resulting in them becoming brittle or soft, depending on the material.

I can tell you that it should not be used as a lubricant for Rubik's cube for that very reason. Petroleum jelly is a non-polar hydrocarbon hydrophobic (it doesn't dissolve in water...because water is polar). MOST plastics (polyethylene) will dissolve in it though. Likes dissolve likes

Just gak a bit of silicon on the gasket and tighten. It'll never leak, and doesn't have any of the drawbacks of vaseline.

Genius
Coincidentally silicon (spray) is the only acceptable lubricant for rubik's cubes. Make sure it's dry though because silicon is polar and as we know from filling a tank that has uncured silicon, problems can arise.

One thing I can tell you about vasoline is that it comes off 3 year olds and everything they can smear it on(bedding) with warm water and dish soap, and elbow grease. I don't think it would be a good seal for any period of time due to it not being able to hold much pressure.

Water is polar as I have already explained, vaseline is not. Using water doesn't work well.
