OK--OK--SHALL WE ALL MOVE ON NOW LIKE ADULTS???
Now for my tank glass tops keep too much heat in the tank with my MH lighting, egg crate is a pain to clean, and the heat from the MH softens the egg crage to the point it sags into the water, now for netting that is a much bigger pain to take on and off, i tried plastic frames and covered them with window screening---the filtered too much light out and the salt spray clogged them fast. When i come up with something good that is easy to use and clean
i will pass it along.

I have 250w MH's and they don't heat up my egg crate....How close are your lights to the top of your tank???

Move on like adults? Haha, I want to hold off on becoming an adult for as long as possible. Meowenfuego...I like it!

As for the type of cover...you could get an acrylic cover and drill some holes in it for gas exchange...
Or not, I don't know if that would work for you. Just brainstorming here.

I might try that acrylic with the 29g....since I am thinking of a jawfish, and they seem to be jumpers....

Realize that's just a brainstorm. I don't have experience with this kind of lid. Don't blame me if your fish find a way through it or if it is too hard to drill and doesn't end up working...

Spanko has an acrylic lid...so the brainstorm came from him

And I asked my husband if we had a drill that could drill 1/4" acrylic and he said yes.....or I would just have the glass shop do it....I already have to measure around the filter and skimmer...
and if it doesn't work....back to eggcrate
...

Your not running a sump are you?
if not, be carefull with lids.. Lids inhibit gas exchange, leading to co2 build up > lower pH > algae problems among other problems. Not gunna mention light penetration, and heat build up because I feel gas exchange is more important here

Nope...there will be no sump on this 29g...Right now I am using eggcrate, and my main reason for a lid is to keep the cats out

BUT if I want a fish know for jumping I know (from experience) eggcrate will not keep it in...that is why I was thinking acrylic...I could drill many holes in the top..and make them small enough so no one could get out (OR IN..LOL)

hmm....That could possible work with pc's or maybe T-5's..I'd be hesitant with metal halides though...they get so hot...I had a piece of screen on top of my big tank while I was acclimating my MH lights, and it melted onto the glass lid and broke the glass( when I still had glass)...Thank goodness it only broke in 2 pieces and I was able to lift both pieces out
