Hi every one . My name is dan and I live on phoenix az . I just bought a oceanic hex front flat back tank with stand for 50.00 $ off of c list . The person up grated to a bigger tank and had no room for this one . This will be my first salt water tank ever . I been doing a lot of reading on owning one and I cant wait to get it started . I know a 55 gal is a little small for salt water but you got to start somewhere and I live in a apt building so I don’t have lots of room to put one up . This tank is only going to be fish and live rock at this point till I can get in the full hang of salt water . With a 50/50 of live sand and crush coral for a base . I been dealing with a worker from a place here in phoenix called ocean floor . He’s been a big help with me in getting the stuff to set my tank up . Well I don’t want to bore you all with my rambling . I posted a few pitchers of my tank . I will be building a custom canopy for the top to house my lights and moon lights . Hope you all enjoy and any info you want to post to me let me know . I never get tired of learning and i joined this sight to learn all i can .

found these pitchers on the net . but is going to be somewhat how my top is going to be .

That is a cool canopy. Welcome aboard and hope your adventure in SW is a fun one. Have you planned everything out? What all is going to go in the tank? what equipment are you planning on using?

Very nice tank...and welcome to the site
a 55G is a great starting tank.....before you add the cc, try to think of what you wnat in the tank....it will limit some critters.....(personally I like all sand)

i would really like to have the tank drilled but i dont have the space to do it and i could clean up the glass living on the 3 story apt building . so for now i am going to run a fluval 405 external canister filter so all i got is two little tubes running up the back you wont see all the easy . i got a 48 t5 light for it now two . all in all i put 800.00 on layaway yesterday worth of stuff between the light, filter, skimmer, test kit ,power heads , . i should have it payed off in four weeks . hoping to have it up and running by my bday in feb . as far as sand goes i am with you i like all sand bottoms . just need to find a place to buy 55 lbs of live sand and not have to cut anymore limbs off to pay for it lol . i know the LR is going to cost my alot . if there is anymore suggestions please share with me .

Nice job on the canopy and retro kit. Drilling a tank really isn't as messy as it sounds but a canister will work to get you started on your fish only system. I'm a fan of the 50/50 mix of sand and smaller agronite (crushed coral) sand. What you could do is get half live rock and half non live rock...same thing with the sand. Leave your tank fishless for a month or two while the tank is cycling and the live rock and sand will populate the dead stuff. It works out cheaper that way. Infact if you have the patience for it you can get just live sand and all dead rock or visa versa. There's lots of ways to do it cheaper if you have the patience.
Good luck and welcome!

Sorry everyone I have not had an update laity. Been having a wiled week . Thursday night after I got to work my wife called me because my 2 year old son had a seizure so life has been a mess the past few days . But he’s all better now . I have done a complete water and weight test to make sure there is no leaks and the floor was going to hold the tank and all has passed .now the new problem I was helping my dad move out of his old house the other night and I was talking to his neighbor and he’s got a 95 gal tank he’s going to be getting rid of so I might switch to that tank instead of the 55 gal . but we will see what happens . Anyways every one have a good day out there .

Yes. Hoping your son is well!
Think about the fact that the 95 gallon is nearly twice the size of the 55 and double the sand and live rock. Regardless of what you decide, you don't need to fill it to the top with the live rock, add a bit at a time. Good luck. There are great people here with great suggestions. Welcome!
