no there was like 5 blue tubs on floor no water in them and the guy pointed at one of the tubs and said that this rock is the only one i can use becuase it was live rock at one point and had been dried out.

There had to be some die off in it which caused a spike in ammonia. What else could it have possibly been? Unless it had a cleaning chemical on it or something? Bleach residue? Something along those lines. Something was def on it.

Was there anything on it...that could have come off in the water, like old dead stuff
probably should have soaked it first....

HMMM....did you test the water is your bucket to see what the levels were....I am also betting there was some more die off on it that needed to be "soaked" off
if you ever get rock again, and are adding it to an established tank....IMO put it in a tote with SW, a heater and a powerhead...test the water after a day...or two....if levels rise...change some water...and treat it like a cycle...do not add it to you tank until levels in the tub are at 0
maybe that will help for the next time
sorry about this time
