My LED chip is being shipped out today. Chris also advised me to email him directly for any issues about the fixtures. Ummm, last time I checked that does not work.

Good luck, Krista. It should be pretty strait forward. Once you pull the cover off you should be able to tell if one of the leds are fried. At that point it looks like just a simple matter of turning a few screws, pull the old one out and then lay the new one in. There's nothing to hook up or unhook. Those black square looking things should have contact points on the bottom side of them. Pretty simple, actually.

Just keep in mind exactly which 4 aren't lit right now. Are they all the same color?
If for some reason you cannot visually see which led is bad then just becareful that you don't accidentally go changing the colors around without confirmation from them that it's ok.

I'm confused.....
New chip:

Old:

The chip to be replaced is the one on the bottom. Am I supposed to do something to it?

Hmmm...well whatever chip they sent you is definitely different from the one that is bad. I don't know if that's because they are just using a different brand of violet led these days or because they sent you the wrong type all together.
Do you have two AA batteries and a couple of short pieces of wire by any chance? Could test the new one and see if it's violet.
You shouldn't have to do anything to the leds at all. It looks like they use some little thermal or dielectric pads that go between the leds and the board/heatsink. I'd just make sure that gets installed under the new one.

Following along as well....Does appear different......I'd get on the horn with Chris first thing.....

There is some type of pad to attach the new chip. I emailed Chris but I have yet to hear back. I know he lives in Jersey so he may have been impacted by the storm.

Can you confirm that it is one of the violet leds that went bad? The fixtures have the same layout I assume? I'd test them just for kicks to verify if they are correct color while I waited.

I'm going to take both fixtures down and compare them. The violet LED's in the fixture I had down did not appear to be burned out. Chris did email me back and where he is was heavily impacted by the hurricane. It won't be until next week when he can help me.

Is this the same layout as the fixtures that you have? Some of the information floating around out there on these things is a little bit conflicting. In the picture the led on the top left and the one on the bottom right look violet to me. But then again I have been meaning to get my eyes checked pretty soon.

Yup, same layout.
In a little bit, I am going to take down both fixtures and check some things out.

Well, I found the dead chip and replaced it with a new one and now all the lights work. I guess the new chip is yet another thing that had to be redesigned for the fixture.

Sweet. Yeah I guess what they're using now is a redesigned 410nm/420nm chip that they are calling super actinic. Supposed to be designed to specifically target photosynthetic absorption which peaks around 412nm for chlorophyll A. I think one of the problems with the other chip is that they are only designed to max out around 0.7 amps of electrical current. So if you're running the fixtures at high output, those chips would be running hotter and being worked harder then some of the others. So they would most likely fail sooner.

Now, I have a new issue....Go figure. The controller isn't properly communicating with the modules. My LED's are ramped all the way up when they should be ramping down.

I'm sooooooo ticked off right now. I decided to play with the controller and now the units won't come on.

Double check all your plug in connections for the controller real good, Krista.
Out of curiosity, do you have your lights surge protected?
