My aquaclear 802 powerhead trapped one of my mexican turbo snails last night killing him.

When I bought it I was worried that the intake at the bottom (which is completely unguarded) would do something like this. I turned it off today.
Has anyone had a similar problem? Is there any way to guard the intake?
