I heard blue leg hermits are more "reef safe" that red leg or zebra's
any truth to this?
I have never heard this myself. I can tell you that the Blue Legs that I've owned are the hardiest and all the most aggressive towards other hermits. They always kill my scarlett's and mexican reef hermits.

LOL! I think my hermits are killing my snails. I have seen both red legs dead and blues, so I think they may be killin each other as well.

They only kill snails for the shell...add some shells and the murder stops.
I have red, scarlet, blue and green legged hermit crabs in my reef with no problems.

I have nas snails, had periwinkles until they decided they wanted air instead of water, and i have a certh. These have been no issue with my blue leg or scarlet leg hermit... My hermit did get a periwinkle shell, but i think the snail i found on the floor was dead when i tossed it back in the tank. Its kinda funny too the shell has lots of room for it to grow into and sometimes it falls off the rock :)

I add shells and it doesn't seem to matter. Usually the hermits just kill each other or the snails for shells, I think they like the hunt, LOL. They're not that expensive so I just gave up and every once in a while I do a head count and add more hermits and snails.

Well, I think that everyones experiences are different. I have always kept blue legged hermits with snails (margarita, turbos, etc) and they have never messed with them. Nor do they mess with my corals either. But I noticed that mine only like the long pointed shells. they would never go into a snail shell. But then again, this is only my experience.

I was ready to stop with hermits until I had a cyano outbreak...that went away REAL fast when I added hermits back into my tank (they cleaned up what I couldn't get off the rocks after I got it under control). Mine were snail murderers, I had over 100 empty shells in my tank that weren't to their liking (it was almost like they were looking for a certain brand name or something). I have since realized that the overall cleaning ability is worth the occasional murder of a snail...and I have found a VERY cheap source of clean up crew members on an auction site, so replenishing isn't nearly as expensive as it used to be!

A lot of people confuse murder with just dying off, Hermits die all the time. Just make sure you have plenty of shells enough food and it will be fine. I've got blue legs, scarlets, electric blues, eventually I want to get some halloween and and some zebras diversity is always a cool thing if you love inverts like me and enjoy the little things in your tank.

I agree
As for shells some prefer the hunt while others will take an empty shell. As far as them being fish and reef safe, I say that they absolutely are.

I definitely would say that the positives that they do far outweigh the negatives that the can do.
I am a little like SocietTaco...I really enjoy watching my inverts...shrimp, hermits, anemone/porcelain crabs, conch, urchin, nassarius snails doing their version of Thriller, etc...
