Wow,
so yesterday, I was getting really concerned. I had a small Cyano outbreak. I removed most of it by hand, and the CUC took care of the rest overnight. I didn't know anybody ate that stuff, but it's gone (Sally Lightfoot - maybe? I dunno, but it's a gravel churning machine)... I made the mistake of starting the tank w/ tap water so I've prolly got some lingering PO4 and/or Silicates (no test kits for those). All water changes since have been w/ RO/DI and NO3 has always read 0.
To provide some background on me, the last time I had a tank, Actinics were only available by special order from the lighting shop in 4' 40wt. Nobody had heard of MH, and PC's and T5's didn't exist. I forget who it was down in FL had just successfully bread clowns, nobody was even thinking about keeping live coral, and Instant Ocean was the salt. Crushed Coral drip filters were just coming on line. Refugium? Wazzat?
We all knew we needed more light, esp. blue, but the only way to get it was to have a wider tank so you could install all those 4' 40 watters... I had 6 crammed over a 40L tank (48"x12"x12") to give an idea.
Hermits and snails were a novelty, not a necessity, and algae was just a fact of life. Nitrates hovering in the 40 range were pretty much par for the course.
Tanks smaller than 55 gals were for experts only, and even then, one was taking a chance. (Against all advice I kept a small octopus in a 10 gal for 3 years.)
The one I worked at was one of the first fish shops in the midwest to stop importing cyanide caught fish, but we still had no idea why our Mandarins would only last 6mo if you were doing well.
Anyway - that's my history - and now I'm back in it and more fascinated than ever.
I got some really cool sunrise (Actinic only) shots, but I'm still unclear as to how to post directly. Do I just click on the add pic icon and paste in the photobucket url?
Thanks,
Emil
