meo, I didn't read the whole thread, but you can jsut put in a GFCI breaker and it will do the same thing. Or if you do the plugs only the very first plug in the run needs to be a GFCI, the rest jsut need to be connected to that one and they will all work.
At home depot or lowes they sell a little device for less than 5 bucks that looks like the plug in end of an extension cord but it has little buttons on it and lights on the back.
These will help make sure when its all done that the GFCI is working as a push of the button will trip the GFCI.
It also has lights that tell you if they are wired properly GFCI or not.
Sorry if this was allready posted, just thought I'd save you some time and money.
Hope I didn't jinx you the other day when I asked you about your clam and the temperature, sheesh.
was the heater that failed a stealth too? Ive heard nothing but bad things about the stealth heaters.

Thanks, I'm not 100% sure what you are talking about, but I will print this and show it to hubby...he may already know this....who knows....
YUP, the heater was a stealth....The one I have left is a stealth too......I am not gonna blame the manufacturer, anything could have happened....something could have chewed it, or as my husband said, I could have pinched the wire (HAH)

a gfi breaker or receptacle will not protect against surges.A gfi will trip when say 5 amp go out but only 4.6 amps come back to the receptacle.A gfi senses a loss of current between the hot and neutral and trip when .4 ma are lost. You can use a ground probe on any receptacle that has a ground wire that goes to your panel gfi or regular plug.If you don't have a ground wire on your plug a ground probe will not work

Currious...what would be the point of running a ground probe on a standard receptical? What excactly would it do?

most pumps ,heaters, and filters only have 2 prongs the hot and neutral no ground when you add the ground probe you add a path for a breaker to trip on a ground fault.

Yes but in Meowzers case here her breaker didn't actually trip. She had a short and it melted the outlet and still no trip, which suprises me. If one of her pumps had leaked electricity she would have fried her fish. I know theres been a ton of debate on these things. But if I were ever to use one it would have to be on a GFCI. That way when it sensed the loss of electricity flowing from hot to neutral you can almost be sure that it would have triped.
But I think she said that she has 5 outlets on 5 dedicated cuircuts. So she would have to run probes for each one that she had equipment on that was under water inside the tank or sump to be fully protected.

I have 4 behind the 225G.....so my husband went yesterday and bought 4 gfci's....and we do have one of those testers that someone mentioned earlier
I don;t have a lot of time today....cause I have A LOT of company coming for our family CHristmas......these should be installed by the end of the week though
SOOOO....Do I move the grounding thing to one of the gfci's or not???/

It's personal choice, Meow. Honestly I don't plan on ever using one. I think the GFCI's would offer enough protection without it, myself. But that's just my opinion.

This talks a little about GFCI and has a link on how to install one. I did it, and I'm still alive.
Glad everything went well for you Meowy.

Thanks for the link Renee you have an awesome site there.. I was think about at some point when I have my reef going, setting up my 55 gal for a Lion but reading the stuff on your site I dunno about it. lol Lions seem kind of difficult to take care of but I am going to keep my options open tho.. I know who I can go to if I have a million and one questions about them.. LOL

if you had 4 receptacles only the first one in line needed the GFCI, the rest are protected by that one.
