i soak all my food in garlic every feeding,
btw i also havent done a waterchange in 8 months,
my inhabitants are 1 clarki 1 coral beauty 1 yellow tang, 1 six line wrasse, 1 yellow watchmans golby, 1 manderian, 1 pistol shrimp, 1 coral banded shrimp, 3 peperment shrimp, 1 blood shrimp, 1 cleaner shrimp....

How do you get by with not doing a water change in 8 months when the rest of us have to do them every two to four weeks to keep the water quality high? What is your water quality, and what is your secret to keeping all those fish alive???? Lesley

I have never had an ich problem (knocking on wood as I type), but I always attributed it to having a "stress free tank" and cleaner shrimp in abundance. Current tanks have been up for three years now.
I'll admit to a secret: I never use a quarantine tank:
shhhhhhh don't tell anyone.

I've dealt with Ich many times in the past. Lost some battles, won more. My reef, however, has been clear of Ich. And it's been established for about a year.

I never had ich in either tank for well over a year. Then I decided I had to have the beautiful pbt at the lfs. Watched it for a couple weeks at the lfs, then bought it, then q'd it for 2 more weeks (should have been 3) then put it in the display. A couple more weeks go by and it has some whitish splothes, not the salty looking things. Did I take it out then? course not, then another week and almost every fish got ich really bad. I set up 2 hospital tanks and was only able to save 3 of my fish with the hypo. The yellow tang, coral beauty and the sixline wrasse. I have no idea if it has anything to do with it since tangs and dwarf angels are prone to ich, but I have had these 3 fish for almost a year and a half. I sure am glad I didn't lose them. They just got out of q about a week ago and happy to be back in the display.

Havn't had ich YET- been set up for almost 7 months. Strange too, cuz my salinity is usually at the high end of the scale. Around 26, 27.

I don't use qurantine tank either. My reef had only 6 water change in amount of 10 gal in 3 yrs.
I'll admit I had almost whole tank wipeout on my FOWLR. Still I have no idea what happend(Gueesing some sort of air freshner fell inside).

I have had all three of my tanks for many years. I moved all of them when we built our new house, so at that time the fish went through a ton of stress. I have only had ich once, and that was when I first set up my first tank. I have had many a discussion about this on this board, but I am a firm believer that the reason I haven't had it is because I have a UV steralizer on each of the tanks. Blah, blah, blah...kill this and kill that. But all of my tanks are thriving, I have never lost an anenome (I have 9, the longest for 6 or 7 years), and all of my corals are obnoxiously big. Say what you will about UV steralizers on a reef tank, but I am ich free!

I've had the reef tank up for going on two years and (knocking on wood), have never had an ICH problem.
I had it in my smaller tank I had, but was able to use copper in that tank since it was FO.
I have two cleaner shrimps in my tank that are very active with their jobs. I actually saw my tang letting one of the shrimp clean out the inside of his mouth!! Dentistry in the aquarium, wow.

Ive been pretty lucky, I just set up a Q tank because I figure my luck is going to run out someday and I have a nice investment in my 15 and 46g tanks, Not going to push my luck any further

I've had my tank set-up for nearly two years. It stinks I have to break it down to move. I have been lucky enough to never get ich and I have only lost 1 fish in the life of the tank. Just lucky I guess.

Hey Rye,
Two years ago I rescued a PBT that was just about to die from Ick. I placed it in my reef to see if I could revive it. It survived with just a couple small scars and it went back to the LFS healthy & fat. I've not seen a trace of Ick since then.

It was about to die? You put it in your reef? With other fish? How did you save it in your reef?

All of my oher fish were in the tank. I'm a strong believer in the power of a Tangs immune system but the Tang must be in a low-stress environment or their immune system shuts down IMO.
I have now doubt that Cryptocaryon irritans exist in my reef. I have just not seen it become a problem because I do my best to provide my animals a good home.
I don't believe Stress causes Ick, but I do believe that stress allows it to infect fish.
I fed the Tang well and kept it in a good environment. It's immune system did the rest.
I'm not a believer in the power of Garlic for fish. But, I don't believe it does any harm unless fed all the time.
