Hi. I just went to my local fish store and bought a horse shoe crab and I was wondering if it would eat red slime or cyto bacteria. Will it. Can it get all the algae off my rocks?

Maybe you should have asked those questions..before..you bought it.
I am not sure, but I don't think they eat cyano

I don't think so man...not very many things actually eat cyano.
You do know that horseshoe crabs get GIANT...right? Poor things are endangered I do believe...but I've been wrong before.

Don't even worry about that. Just get rid of it the right way. I battled with it for months, believe me, that's the best way to do it. Water changes, excellent filtration, and good flow is all you need.

I guess the thousands of them that wash up on the South Jersey shores didn't get that memo.

Okay, I researched that lol. This what TV will do to you
. The show I was watching must have been talking about them being endangered at one specific place...or the show was just full of crap.

I've been in that boat. Do you use RO/DI water? What are your levels? Chaeto and phosban helped me out quite a bit.

Yeah, those things are like cockroaches....they're not going anywhere anytime soon.

horseshoe crabs dont actually eat algae at all, they eat the living organisms in your sand, and if you have cyno,,ya probably dont have to much growing good in your sand, you may want to take the horseshoe crab back, they already have a short life expenctancy in a tank, but if you dont have optimal conditions, it will die and unfortuently very slowly.

the only good thing i think a horseshoe crab could do for a tank is aerate the sand, which a handful of nass snails will do. they're cool crabs for sure, but they get huge and really dont have a place in a domestic tank. also, you may want to think twice about adding anything else to your tank before you conquer the cyano. adding to a tank that is operating at less than optimal conditions is not a great idea. if the livestock gets sick, introduces parasites and needs treated it's just more headache than it should be. I have a horse crab, and he/she has its ups and downs. they act like alittle bull dozer on the floor of your tank, which helps with the sand but it will also push over any small rocks or corals over. But the kids like it so i'm stuck with it.
