It's just the visual appearance. If left alone it will cover all hard surfaces and some soft ones. I wouldn't wait until it's out of control.

I got some red bubble. I put in two emeralds and they are slowly helping. I would alos not wait( like me) and get it out ASAP. It spreads pretty fast.

I have never seen or heard of a snail that eats bubble algae. I have also not heard of much else then emeralds eating it

Velonia/Bubble Algae is a pain in the butt if left to grow uncontrolled as Bang Guy mentioned.
I've battled it for about 6 months now in my 75.
I tried a few small emerald crabs - they didn't do much.
I bought some LARGE emeralds - and thankfully they have just about taken care of problem.
It can become an unsightly problem if you let it go.
Remove any you can by hand, gently removing them and tossing them out.
Get yourself some BIG emeralds - my suggestion.

thanks again for the info... i accidentally posted up htis thread in the wrong area.. obviously (equipment &DIY) .. i put up the same thread in Reef Tank... but i got a lot more help here...
i went to my LFS and we got into sally light foots because my friend wanted one to help his hair algae problem.. the guy there (who, i think, knows a lot and can be reliable) said that theyre pretty aggressive and should be left for a last resort when it comes to hair algae... and then said that his customers said the emeralds can be aggressive too... so now i dont know... i was thinking about taking them out when i do my water change... to vacuum them out... good idea???? let me know..
thanks
by the way... that is one nice looking emerald :D did you have any problems with him?

This is sort of off topic, but still involves Valonia. I went to my LFS the other day, and in one of the tanks they had a huge bubble. It was around 1 1/2" in diameter, and 3-4" long. I about fainted when I saw it. One of the workers said his friend brought it in, but said it was a rare species. I wanted to buy it, but it wasn't even for sale, and who would buy Valonia for their tank?

If left it can grow out of control like above mentioned. The best thing to do is remove it by hand. BUT don't pop the bubble inside your tank because if the liquid inside is released into the water it will make the problem even worse...

Emerald mithrax crabs rock dude, never seen any of mine get aggresive. I bought five and ended up with like 9, so apparently they get there groove on in captivity also.

Yes, but the Foxface at it a couple months ago. It was the last one in the display. I still have some in the refuge but nothing that big. I often bring them up for the Rabbitfish to munch on.
