do you grill, bake, or a combination of both? I grilled a rack one time but they came out too tough. I'm looking for the best way for "fall off the bone" ribs.

6 hours in a crock pot on low.
Then add BBQ sauce at the beginning of the very last hour.

do you live in apartment or something? if not, get a grill! you can get a 3 burner propane setup from walmart for probably $120. a charcoal grill is even less than that.
so what's the recipe?
if you cook on low on the grill, how much time, an hour and a half?
I've seen bake in the oven for 4 hours at 300 degrees. would they be more tender to bake or boil first, or just have them tenderized and throw them on the grill low temp for 1.5 hours?

Not even that long. The oven makes them come out greasy and a lil gross (to me). Cook them on the grill on medium-low for about half an hour-45 mins. They sizzle. You will have to flip them once. Extra sauce to brush on makes them better.

I would boil them for 1 to 1.5 hours and them grill them with bbq sauce. You could also add one more step and just grill them real quick after you boil them and then put them in a crock pot or something that you can lay them down in. Then you cover them in some watered down bbq sauce and let them cook that way for about 20 minutes or so until the bbq sauce thickens back up. Good luck.

Best with charcoal. Large grill/smoker keep closed and flip once. My cooker it takes about 3-4 hours. Slow and easy. Sauce optional after done.
Before you even start...either cut X's or remove the silver skin/fat backing. Rub them racks all up with some ground black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, cinnamon, white mustard powder, and a lil' bit of Lawry's season salt. Keep the salt down as that toughens a good chunck of meat.
If you don't have a kick-booty grill/smoker....use the same rub, add in some liquid smoke and pre-boil them bad boys covered. Better in a pressure cooker for 1/2 hour or so. Slap them things on a regular grill and baste with some Baby Rays and get yer face dirty.

ok, thanks for the answers. I'm going to make some next weekend. I may boil them a little first and then grill. do you all usually tenderize and marinate overnight before cooking?

No need if you're going to boil them.

well, weather permitting. We boil for about 1/2 hour. We put the oven on 250. Get an aluminum pan dump 1/2 bottle of bbq sauce. Place the ribs in pan and other 1/2 of sauce. Cover with foil. Bake for about 2-2-1/2 hours.

That's the thing with pork. The lower the temp and the longer you cook it, the better.
I never had the boiled first. My mom would never make it, she swore all the "flavor" comes out of the ribs and into the water...
I think she based her theory on broth, but I don't know cause I like my crock pot.
I have a book here called Boy meets Grill, lemme see if he has any time/temps...

OK, I found a goofy recipe, but I'll sift through the apricot and fresh mint BBQ stuff and get straight to time and temps...
4 racks ribs (3 lbs each)
olive oil for brushing the ribs
salt and pepper
BBQ (or sauce or glaze of your choice)

preheat a gas grill to medium low. If using charcoal grill, fill the entire grill with a shallow layer of charcoal and light the left outer edge only. As fire moves from left to right, you will have consecutive areas of medium low heat.
Brush the ribs on both sides with olive oil, season with salt and pepper and grill, with the cover closed, until tender, 2 to 2 1/2 hours. During the last 30 minutes of grilling baste on both sides with your sauce (BBQ, or whatever) every 15 minutes, until done. remove from the grill and if serving immediately, brush with more sauce, cut into single ribs and place on a large platter.

So there you have it.

Removing the silverskin is paramount for great ribs.
Super hot grill and plenty of pepper. I agree about salting them too early and they can become tough. Grilled not to try and cook them, but to put some char on.
Then slow boil about 1.5-2 hours.
THEN cut completly apart and let cool.
After cooled dip individual ribs into bucket of BBQ and lay on cookie sheet and back them at 325 for about 30-45 minutes.

I cook mine on the grill at 275-300 for 3 - 3.5 hours. I prep them with a nice rub that I apply a minimum of 8 hours before cooking. While on the grill I like to use a little hickory to give them added flavor. Will add my sauce in the last 15-20 minutes. Also, cook on indirect heat only and always have a drip pan under for added smoke. When done the meat literally falls off the bone.

wow, i'm surprised no one does it this way:
I take the ribs, rub em down with some bbq rub, smother them in a nice sticky bbq sauce, then wrap em in silver foil. put that on low for about 45-60mins on the grill, no need to flip. can't keep em on the bone.

Don't boil them. Makes them all soggy. what you want to do, is wrap them in heavy duty foil. Then marinade them, I like to make a watery brown sugar and bbq sause mix maybe put some liquid smoke in them. Then put them on the grill, let them cook till they are almost done. (basically boiling them on the grill) Then pull them out of the foil, bast them with a little bbq and then pepper it. Then let them cook on the grill for about another 20-30 minutes. Good stuff.
