How hardy are yellow tangs

Well I finally broke down and got a tang yesterday. the Store had like 20 of them in all their tanks. It took my 30min to look at them all to finally pick one. I am not sure if I just didnt notice cause I was looking for parasites or a disease it has a sunk in stomach. Can it recover from this. It seems to eat pellets anytime it floats infront of it. Doesnt go for Mysis yet or anything else. Hasnt really nipped at any of the GHA either.

A sunken/pinched stomach sometimes means bacteria OR collected with cyaniede and will not live. HOPEFULLY you have the new fish in QT. Feed it with foods soaked in FRESH garlic.

i think mine has it too. is it like a little dimple by his stomach?
i hope its not deadly even though i am treating it with copper because my heni gave it ich.
man i thought it was normal

Rule of thumb, if you have to ask how hardy a fish is, you probably shouldnt own it yet. Ask that question before you buy the fish.... Also a QT is always a good idea, but a complete necessity for a yellow tang which (as I understand it) is a complete ich magnet.
That said, good luck, I really do hope your fish does better. Lets hope it wasnt collected with cyanide (i didnt think that happened anymore), and that it was just thin. Garlic is supposed to help with a fish's immune system. Myreef05's suggestion seems good.

LOL...Not owning it yet...LOL make it sound like its some kinda thing that could kill you like some heavy machinery. It is just a fish, I know they are iffy. I just never had a fish with a pinched stomach like this. I was wondering how strong they are at battling this symptom.

As stated, it could be caused by any sort of problem such as bacterial, internal parasites, etc. Then again, it may just be malnourished. Not having it in an isolated tank surely will not help you fight the battle, however. Yellow tangs are definitely one of the more hardy tangs, but if it has an internal parasite or if it was caught with cyanide, strong or weak fish will not really matter much.
I recommend that all new additions be properly quarantined. All it really takes it to have a 20 gallon long set up somewhere, and every time you get a new fish, get it up and running and move some filter media over from your display tank to prevent a cycle from occurring.
Regardless, good luck with the new fish.

sorry, I must have misread your first post. I though you said you already got it. Maybe this post would be better in the "disease and treatments" section. Might want to try it there, people who really know there stuff. Good luck...

If it is nothing more than a fish to you, why are you asking? If you actually want advice and are going to take that advice then we can help you. What sized tank do you have? You stated earlier that you do not qt your fish. That will be a real problem. There are many reasons why a tang's stomache could be pinched. Ask the lfs to feed him prepared foods in front of you. Go back the next day and ask him to do it again. See how readily the fish accepts the food.

That is how I see the situation . Why would he be so concerned on how to help the fish if it is at the lfs ? QT is a must in my book . Why contaminate your DT with a new fish and destroy the other fish ?
If "it is just a fish" to you , why do you even have an aquarium ? They are just fish , right ?

I'd like to add something if I may. And I may get flamed (is that the correct, term? I saw it in another thread somewhere). I'm new here, and to SW as well. I've joined several message boards to get advice and just find someone to 'talk fish' with. This board has an enormous amount of knowledge and experience, and I trust what I read here more than any other board I've come across on the net. But I also see so many posts that give me, as a newbie, the feeling that unless we're die-hard enthusiasts, totally obsessed, and willing to spend thousands of dollars a month on our tanks and livestock, we shouldn't even have a tank. And maybe that's true.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't see a whole lot of room here for beginners or those that can't devote their entire lives to this. I've only posted a few times and received nothing but polite and useful advice. And I just can't tell you how much I appreciate that. But I've also seen some posts where some unsuspecting person is asking a question or sharing some news, and gets tied up with air hose and thrown in the sump for doing something that the regulars think is wrong. Maybe, being new, I'm just taking the responses in the wrong way. Or maybe this board is really for only the die-hard experts.

yea thats pretty much how it is. I dont QT never have never will. My tank is 98% reef i only have 4 small fish. I wasnt asking about how good tangs are my question was how strong are they at fighting the pinched belly looking thing since I never had a fish with stomach like this before.
I have spent thousands on my tank and corals in past few months. The fish is in a good environment and I try to help it eat to. If it dies its not like i didnt try. I am not gonna get all bent out of shape about a dead fish. Some people take this stuff to far.

This board is for everyone , newbies , intermediates , and die hards . This is why there is a beginner section of this board . Now sometimes people seem to think they can just skip or go cheap on things that really need to be done right the first time or will cost more in the long run . As an example going cheap on lighting like some of the cheap no name brands is nothing but trouble . The people here that have already experianced this or know better is just trying to pass that on , but again some which seems to be a lot here tell the beginner to go buy the best . There are many new things I have seen on this forum , some I feel are bad and some good which you will get anywhere . This is an expensive hobby no matter which way you go . Do what you can afford , that is what I do . I can`t afford to go buy 100lbs of lr at once , so I buy a little at a time as I`m sure others do .
Anyway , welcome to SWF and I hope you have better experiances here as this is a good forum with a lot of info available .

Thanks, Dawman. I'm only a month into it but I'm totally amazed at how awesome my tank is. It's such a different world in there. I could just sit and stare at them go about their lives for hours. I think I'm making my peppermint shrimp paranoid.
I can't afford to go with the best of the best or get it all at once, either (single mom, 3 jobs, etc. You know the story.) ). But I'm trying to get some of the "better" things by buying used from reliable sources. I'm in the market for some used MH lights 30" or under. If you come across some for sale, let me know.
