Can anyone tell me how long is neccessary to keep the metal halide lights on a reef tank? I am trying to cut back on my electric. Right now i have them on for 11-12 hours a day.

i used to keep mine on for 12 hrs. but i'm finding that I think it's too much high light, so I scaled them back to 8 - 9 hours a day in hopes that would curb negative algae growth.

4 hours a day of intense light is all that most corals require.
You could add some flourescent lighting and keep that on 10 - 12 hours a day and only fire the MH for 4 hours in the middle of the day.
I wouldn't go from 12 hours a day right to 4 hours a day though. I'd suggest a gradual decrease in the amount of time the lights are on.
