I feel very fortunate to have a whole house generator at home and a couple portable ones at work. I convinced my wife that we 'needed' the whole house one for security reasons!?! Everyone that has swreefs knows the real reason
Honda, gas portable. Never had to use it (knock on wood), but it is snowing cats and dogs tonight (4" + so far and still coming down in sheets), so who knows. I fire it up a couple times a year just to make sure she's ready.
Dont have one. The longest power outage i can remember at my house was three days, kept the house warm with the fireplace and i had freshwater then and the fish were fine.

Plus to living in the big city....no power outages I cant remember last time we lost power for longer than like 3 hours? knock on wood.
You've just cursed yourself, you realize that right?
No generator but I do keep a large marine battery on a trickle charger. I have a power inverter that I hook up to it to run the return pump and heater. I normally don't lose power for more than a day and the battery can handle it. When we lost power for 3 days, I drained the marine battery and backed it up with my car battery.
We just talked the boss of the house (my mother) into letting us get one right after the first storm hit the 'burgh last Friday. She finally understood the necessity after losing power for a significant time and seeing us freak out over the tanks. Luckily her co-worker had offered to sell us a used one a few months ago that they still had. $300 and a couple of spark plugs well spent!
Got one. I lived in hurricane country before relocating and needed it often. The last time (Katrina) it didn't do much good. Here is an experience I recently had, fish in question are all doing great. A generator is not only vital for my fish; it keeps beer & gin cold during any possible summer power outage. A guy can't be too careful about the important stuff in life. https://forums.saltwaterfish.com/vb/s...d.php?t=370867
unless u live in a rural area, there isnt a need to invest in a generator since most power loss r restored within a few hours. i, myself actually hv a power inverter to keep the powerheads running for at least 5-8 hours in case of power outage.
Around here it's the rural areas that usually have power restored quickly and the cities that have multi-day outages.
In the cities these things seem to happen on a wide scale fairly often. I know because I have loaned my generator to fellow reefkeepers on a regular basis. If you have a nice reef tank it would be a shame to have to start over every 10 years.
