Hydroid Jellyfish

I've discovered these star-like things on my glass and searched around a bit to find out that they are hydroid jellyfish.
No one seems to have any information about them.
How did they get there, and how do you get rid of them.
Is anyone an authority that can make an intelligent comment about these creatures?
Reading responses in other threads like "Throw a hairdryer in the tank. Only kidding." is frustrating to read.
I would just like to educate myself on the topic.

Most will disappear on their own. Some types can eat detritus and those can be a problem. I'd just scrape them off and see if they keep coming back.
They are a very common hitchhiker.

i have them to.. dont really do any harm just stick on the front glass and they keep coming back even after i clean them off...thats the only problem ive had with them
